Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed November as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/links-1.govdelivery.com\/CL0\/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Fwhitmer%2Fnews%2Fproclamations%2F2024%2F11%2F01%2Fnovember-2024-family-caregivers-month%3Futm_campaign=%26utm_medium=email%26utm_source=govdelivery\/1\/0100019321e14681-1cbb95c3-a9a4-46d5-9d57-cf643a6a751b-000000\/i7EmcM6HcwH75igDMBUapKnLs84LsdvsB16QUJotpl0=379\">Family Caregivers Month<\/a>\u00a0in Michigan. This effort raises awareness of the critical role family caregivers play in providing a broad range of assistance for older adults, service members, veterans, people with disabilities, and those with serious or chronic health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn estimated 1.7 million family caregivers in our state step up every day to ensure their loved ones can live in their own homes and communities for as long as possible regardless of age or disability status,\u201d said Elizabeth Hertel, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services director. \u201cWe are committed to supporting these caregivers not only this month, but every month.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commission on Services to the Aging welcomes the Governor\u2019s recognition of the important work done by family caregivers,\u201d said Nancy Duncan, Commission on Services to the Aging Advocacy Committee chair. \u201cTheir care, love and dedication allow older adults to remain safely at home as they age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Resources for family caregivers include support groups, toolkits and workshops through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, advocacy organizations and community-based services.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/links-1.govdelivery.com\/CL0\/https:%2F%2Fcaringacross.org%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2024%2F04%2FCAG-MI-Care-PDF_v2.pdf%3Fceid=18128142%26emci=bbf76b63-a8f5-ed11-907c-00224832eb73%26emdi=6b5c3a57-9997-ef11-88ce-000d3a98fa6b%26utm_campaign=%26utm_medium=email%26utm_source=govdelivery\/1\/0100019321e14681-1cbb95c3-a9a4-46d5-9d57-cf643a6a751b-000000\/7a8gAlzSCOJ6S0B2yZ-dFsYEcAqlBcEtLW8lwFerEK8=379\">A Michigan Care Kit<\/a>\u00a0is available from Caring Across Generations and additional resources are available through the\u00a0Caregiver Action Network\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/links-1.govdelivery.com\/CL0\/https:%2F%2Fwww.aarp.org%2Fcaregiving%2F%3Fmsockid=2240f755adb061c83344e409ac106092%26utm_campaign=%26utm_medium=email%26utm_source=govdelivery\/1\/0100019321e14681-1cbb95c3-a9a4-46d5-9d57-cf643a6a751b-000000\/0RFZZfpPI0bQFaGJPhZlg4l_I2M2TK3yrv9IvDgL8-s=379\">AARP Resources for Caregivers and their Families<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaregivers experience the impact of caring on their time, with implications for their health, family, work and personal and financial well-being,\u201d said David LaLumia, 4AM executive director.\u202f\u201cCaregivers deserve our gratitude and our support.\u202f This month, we are pleased to recognize their many contributions to some of our most vulnerable citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Family caregivers are the unsung heroes in our communities, providing essential care that enable loved ones to age with dignity at home,&#8221; said Paula D. Cunningham, AARP Michigan state director. &#8220;This month, and every month, we honor their dedication and recognize the invaluable support they offer to Michigan&#8217;s older adults and families.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the Caregiver Action Network, more than half of those providing care in the United States do not recognize themselves as caregivers.
