Anti-Muslim violence breaks bones and breaks hearts. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

It has to end!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

We all want to live and raise our children in a safe place. Two immigrant parents thought they came to the United States for exactly that, only to have their dreams dashed in March.<\/p>\n

A Houston, TX teen, born in Afghanistan, was\u00a0<\/a>brutally assaulted by her classmates<\/a>. She spent days in the hospital and was discharged with a neck brace. She\u2019s justifiably afraid of returning to school. A Columbus, OH, mom, born in Somalia and wearing a hijab, was\u00a0<\/a>attacked by her own neighbors<\/a>\u00a0outside her home. The Columbus Police know who her attackers are; they even interviewed them, and the assault was\u00a0<\/a>caught on video<\/a>. But still,\u00a0<\/a>no charges have been filed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

These were violent, anti-Muslim acts targeting a girl and a woman who did nothing wrong. Said the Houston teen\u2019s father, “I heard about the U.S. That there is freedom, there’s education, there’s law.” And then his daughter was attacked.<\/p>\n

The Columbus mother said,\u00a0“We’re all created by God and we’re all the same. We should all be treated the same way. They should not be doing this to someone else.” That’s why she spoke up and bravely called the police. But weeks later, she’s still waiting for justice.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a lawyer for the mass murderer who killed 23 people at an El Paso Walmart said his client\u00a0<\/a>acted to stop<\/a>\u00a0\u201cthe Hispanic invasion of Texas.\u201d According to attorney Joe Spencer, his client “thought he had to stop the invasion because that\u2019s what his president was telling him, which is just not rational.”<\/p>\n

The Houston father and the Columbus mother are right. The United States should be a place where they can start over in safety and raise their families. And the Texas lawyer is right, too. His client\u2019s anti-immigrant worldview is\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0rational. But it is being incited, encouraged, and excused by the occupant of the White House and his entire team.\u00a0Still, there are\u00a0many people in the United States<\/a>\u00a0who do not<\/em> want us to be this version of our country.<\/p>\n

Deqa Haji, Executive Director of Zamzam Women & Family Center, is supporting the Columbus mom in her journey to seek justice. She said, \u201cNo mother should fear violence after dropping her kids off at the school bus. This brutal attack against an Ohio mom is heartbreaking and unacceptable. Similarly, the Columbus Division of Police\u2019s poor handling of this case is concerning. Immigrant families come to this country seeking safety and opportunity. They deserve to feel secure in their homes and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ali Hussein, President of United Bantu of Ohio, added, \u201cWe are shaken by this attack and are working around the clock to help our sister obtain justice. Let\u2019s be clear, this was a violent hate crime. What isn\u2019t clear is what\u2019s being done to bring these assailants to justice. It\u2019s been weeks since we met with the Columbus Police, yet no one has been arrested, and we have yet to receive answers to our questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Our families and communities deserve better. Anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant racism breaks bones and breaks hearts. It kills, and it has to end.\u00a0We<\/em>\u00a0have to end it!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Todos queremos vivir y criar a nuestros hijos en un lugar seguro. Dos padres inmigrantes pensaron que hab\u00edan venido a Estados Unidos precisamente para eso, pero sus sue\u00f1os se vieron frustrados en marzo.<\/em><\/p>\n

Una adolescente de Houston, Texas, nacida en Afganist\u00e1n, fue brutalmente agredida por sus compa\u00f1eros de clase. Pas\u00f3 d\u00edas en el hospital y le dieron de alta con un aparato ortop\u00e9dico. Tiene un miedo justificado de volver a la escuela. Una madre de Columbus, Ohio, nacida en Somalia y que llevaba un hiyab, fue atacada por sus propios vecinos fuera de su casa. La Polic\u00eda de Columbus sabe qui\u00e9nes son sus atacantes; incluso los entrevist\u00f3, y la agresi\u00f3n fue grabada en video. Sin embargo, a\u00fan no se han presentado cargos.<\/em><\/p>\n
