In the 1930s, the United States faced unprecedented unemployment rates, and millions of Americans were plunged into poverty. The prevailing belief was that individuals should rely on personal savings and family support during difficult times. However, the severity of the Depression revealed the inadequacy of this approach.

The Social Security Act of 1935

In response to these challenges, President Franklin D. Roosevelt championed the creation of a social insurance program designed to provide financial assistance to the elderly. On August 14, 1935, he signed the Social Security Act into law. The Act established a system of old-age benefits for workers, unemployment insurance, and aid to families with dependent children. It represented a significant shift in government policy, emphasizing collective responsibility and shared risk.
