Both are needed. Both need to be efficient. Both need to meet the needs of the people they serve.

What is the real reason for Musk’s appointment, which ended after his 130-day stint on May 29, 2025? While this may seem new to some of you, trying to discredit the government, declaring the private sector is better, we have been headed in this direction for a long time. When politicians profit off businesses while in office or are owned by businesses that have funded their campaign, we all lose.

Some of you may remember the debate, on October 5, 2000, between Republican, Vice President Dick Cheney and the Democrat nominee, Joe Liberman. In response to Lieberman’s jibe that Cheney had profited greatly from the job he had recently departed as CEO of the Haliburton Corporation, the government-based contractor, the Republican nominee replied, “I can tell you, Joe, the government had absolutely nothing to do with it.” Cheney’s statement became one of the most telling statements of our time. Leiberman laughed good-naturedly and joked about joining the private sector himself, but the comment went unchallenged. This kind of corporate welfare, for the most part, is still unchallenged and even more out of control under the current administration. Their message is clear: politicians and bureaucrats know more about how to live your life, manage your health, and raise your kids than you do. Former president Ronald Reagan once said: ‘Government exists to protect us from each other. Where the government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves’.”

You can see this historical, conservative, trend that has the USA upside down now, with the current administration publicly exploiting it in plain sight. Our current administration hired a private sector technical giant from South Africa. Elon Musk created DOGE to look for efficiencies and reduce the size of government in a scope that has never been seen before. By Musk’s action, DOGE could easily stand for Dismantling Our Government for Enterprises. Why did they do this, you ask? Is it really to make the government more efficient, or perhaps to dismantle long, stable governmental departments so they can claim that they are not working by arbitrarily cutting them to the bone? Citizens, then, are not served and are on hold forever when they call. Then businesses will come in and say we can do better and, you guessed it, PRIVATIZE the agencies. The right wing has no problem with taxpayer dollars as long as it is going into their pockets.

We see this in the privatization of prisons and detention centers for immigrants, schools, and water in Flint, Michigan. Additionally, in the aging network, private health insurance companies will now run the state of Ohio Medicaid Waiver Services beginning January 1, 2026, for home care services of older adults 60+ who meet nursing home level of care for home health aides so they can age in place. Republican Representative Barbara Sears, a former insurance worker from Sylvania, Ohio, was once appointed the head of the Ohio Department of Medicaid. Before that, Ohio Governor John Kasich (R) created the Office of Health Care Transformation and put an insurance worker in charge of that as well, embedding the state’s aging system.

The right wing’s goal in government has always been to cut and merge, and cut and merge, and cut and merge. Their ultimate goal is to eliminate individual departments into one big box store, in what I call the “Walmartization” of the United States. As a licensed social worker, we are required to follow all laws, are mandatory reporters, and must take 3 hours of ethics every two years. Fraud, waste, and abuse did not start with Elon Musk. Additionally, anyone who works in programs funded by Medicaid (health care and other services for low-income individuals) we are required to take a course called “Fraud, Waste, and Abuse” ANNUALLY and pass a test for each section as a requirement by the funder. Again, we are mandatory reporters and must report if we suspect any unlawful activities. According to the U.S. Office of Inspector General, fraud is intentional deception for personal gain, waste is careless spending or mismanagement of resources, and abuse is excessive or improper use of resources contrary to their intended purposes. As one who wrote Request for Proposals, negotiated contracts, and then monitored those contracts, for local government and later a regional non-profit, the program monitor’s job is to provide technical assistance to the providers, so they know what is allowable and not allowable with their multiple funding streams. The tools that a monitor uses are based on laws and regulations, ensuring the contractors are in compliance while meeting their contractual goals and objectives.

The goal of the program monitor is to ensure the providers understand their contract and the rules that govern it so they can be efficient, compliant, and meet the needs of the clients they are serving under the grant. The goal is for the providers to be successful, and yes, if you do uncover fraud, handle it and recoup funds if needed. Another big factor is that an organization should have enough internal controls and oversight to prevent fraud, waste, and abuse. Segregation of fiscal duties, etc. As a former certified math teacher, social worker, and a master’s degree in education in computer science, and a 30-year administrator, I would like to know, just what credentials did Elon Musk’s team have? Being a computer programmer does not make you a good fiscal monitor, especially if you were in only the private sector, which has a totally different set of rules and standards than public funds. Did they have any CPAs or trained fiscal auditors? I don’t care how intelligent they are, you don’t want a pulmonologist doing your heart surgery. As the current administration’s repeated message to the public has been the government is a “deep state,” as if they are hardened criminals stealing your money through wasted taxpayer dollars, when instead most of them being dedicated staff working for the interest of the public good and would make much more money in the private sector but have a calling. As I said before, many on the right don’t mind using taxpayers’ dollars as long as it is going into their pocket, including Elon Musk and his DOGE team. Not only did Musk not meet the goals he claimed to achieve, but he also cost the government more money, cut the IRS so the billionaires are less likely to be audited, including himself, thus reducing the federal revenue, increasing the deficit. We call this a conflict of interest in the monitoring world. Again, the current administration’s goal is to cut governmental staff so they are overloaded and can’t get their job done in a timely manner, so they can now claim government workers are inefficient, so they can, guess what? Give it to the private sector to run. And who do you go to if you have a problem? Some loop of an automated phone menu and never get to a human being to actually assist you, which is the norm in corporate America now?

I urge anyone reading this to use their critical thinking skills and not be duped by the smoke and mirrors show in D.C., trying to convince you of all the fraud, waste, and abuse. By now, I’m sure you know someone who has lost their job due to these cuts, either federally or the upcoming Medicaid cuts, which the current administration is passing the cost back to the states, as his billionaire cronies pay less in taxes than the average middle American. If the private sector takes over the function of government with turning a profit as a goal, and your needs are not met, we will all be living the Flint, Michigan water situation, when the government privatized their water and the residents went without tap water for years, still being resolved today.

Government for the people, by the people, and of the people.
