Seventeen (17) young adults who are graduating from area high schools and emancipated from LCCS celebrated this milestone with a series of special events. Their special day, June 5th, began with a graduation parade at noon, where the graduates rode around the downtown Toledo Summit Center. LCCS staff and community partners celebrated from the sidewalk with cheers and signs of congratulations. This tradition started as a COVID-related solution to celebrating graduates and has only grown in popularity. The graduates then attend a special luncheon in their honor, served by volunteers from Friends of LCCS. The nonprofit affiliate sponsors the luncheon each year, which is also attended by each graduate’s family/caregiver support system. The graduates are then “spoiled” with items purchased by LCCS staff from a “wish list” each Independent Living student filled out earlier in the spring. The students then departed LCCS for a limousine ride to Maumee, where the celebration continued after a brief stop at Middlegrounds Metropark for group graduation photos. Once the limo arrived in Maumee, volunteers from Love & Luggage welcomed these recent grads to a gathering at First Presbyterian Church of Maumee where they were treated to a hot meal, given a large piece of luggage on wheels. Then they invited to “shop” for brand new, independent living items donated by individuals, local businesses, and civic groups. Items given to the graduates included pots, pans, housewares, towels, sheets, pillows, first-aid kits, personal hygiene items, food items, cleaning supplies, and toolkits to help the recent graduates set up their first apartments. They even got connected with a large team of volunteer adults who have agreed to mentor them for as long as necessary and who help them find employment.

This celebration came about, as shared by Sarah Otis at this event, when their daughter came to live with them (her and her husband) all their daughter’s items were in 3 large black trash bags. Sarah and Jim Otis dreamed one day of making sure all children in foster care, when they aged out, would have a luggage bag to move out into the world and starter items to begin their new life, independently. Once foster-placed youth graduate from high school, most move on to live independently and get a job, begin an apprenticeship or other training, or start college. Since they formerly lived in group, foster, or relative caregiver homes, most do not have the necessary amenities to start living independently.

The mission of LCCS is to lead the community in the protection of children at risk of abuse and neglect. This is accomplished by working with families, service providers, and community members to assess risk and coordinate community-based services, resulting in safe, stable, and permanent families for children.

Love & Luggage was founded by the Maumee couple, Sarah and Jim Otis, in honor of their adopted daughter. The Love & Luggage family has supported 75 young adults since 2021. Love and Luggage provides material and mentoring support to emancipating youth from LCCS. High school graduation is only the beginning of the ongoing support provided to the young adults. Through monthly meals and life skills education sessions, Love and Luggage provides a peer support group to help the young adults navigate their way into real-life situations of work, parenting, finances, family, and higher education. This support includes access to a food and personal items pantry, as well as adult mentors to help offer advice and tackle life’s more challenging situations with solutions as needed.

Lucas County Children Services (LCCS) y Love & Luggage Celebran la Graduación de Jóvenes Emancipados

Por la Dra. Linda Alvarado-Arce

By Dr. Linda Alvarado-Arce Lucas County Children Services (LCCS) and the nonprofit Love & Luggage celebrated the graduation of emancipated youth on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
