THIS DIDN\u2019T HAVE TO HAPPEN!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

They did it. The Trump administration deported Emerson Colindres. What kind of cold, callous heart do you have to have deport a young man like him, at the start of his future? Like his whole family, Emerson was on a path to a U visa. He lived most of his life here. His teachers loved him, his teammates, his coaches. This didn’t have to happen.<\/strong> The federal government could have made a different choice; they could have let him stay.<\/p>\n

When you give birth, it’s like a piece of your heart is walking around outside of your body. I can’t imagine what it was like for Emerson’s parents, knowing he was far away in an immigration jail in Louisiana, and then on that deportation plane \u2014 in shackles, no less. My son is the same age as Emerson; they played soccer against each other. The only difference is my son had the luck of being born here. It breaks my heart to think about Emerson being treated this way.<\/p>\n

People move. It’s as old as time; a basic part of being human. Emerson’s parents did what any of us would do, if we had to \u2014 they found a safe place to raise their kids. They applied for asylum, but\u00a0the way our system works<\/a>\u00a0is so messed up. It\u00a0doesn’t actually provide safety<\/a>\u00a0for most people who need it. They found a different visa path and all the government had to do was wait a little longer for them to get it.<\/p>\n

But the Trump administration wouldn’t wait. It wanted Emerson to be another number in their mass deportation quota. But there’s a person behind every number. There’s a face and an entire community. These aren’t statistics, they are human beings with hopes, dreams, and dignity.<\/strong><\/p>\n

By all accounts, Emerson is a great kid who has a bright future ahead of him. Ohio will miss out, because Emerson is no longer here. This didn’t have to happen, and it doesn’t have to happen again, to anyone. We need ICE out of our communities. We need to end the ICE contracts with Ohio county jails and police forces that make it possible for deportations like this to take place. We don’t need bills like\u00a0SB 172<\/a>, that only encourage more abductions of our Ohio community members. None of this makes us any safer, it only makes our families and communities more hurt and more broken.<\/p>\n

Esto no ten\u00eda por qu\u00e9 pasar.<\/strong> El gobierno federal podr\u00eda haber tomado una decisi\u00f3n diferente; podr\u00edan haberlo dejado quedarse.<\/p>\n

Cuando das a luz, es como si un pedazo de tu coraz\u00f3n estuviera dando vueltas fuera de tu cuerpo. No puedo imaginar c\u00f3mo fue para los padres de Emerson saber que estaba lejos, en una c\u00e1rcel de inmigraci\u00f3n en Luisiana, y luego en ese avi\u00f3n de deportaci\u00f3n, con grilletes, nada menos. Mi hijo tiene la misma edad que Emerson; jugaron al f\u00fatbol entre ellos. La \u00fanica diferencia es que mi hijo tuvo la suerte de nacer aqu\u00ed. Me rompe el coraz\u00f3n pensar que trataran as\u00ed a Emerson.<\/p>\n

La gente se muda. Es algo tan antiguo como el tiempo; una parte fundamental de la humanidad. Los padres de Emerson hicieron lo que cualquiera de nosotros har\u00eda si fuera necesario: encontraron un lugar seguro para criar a sus hijos. Solicitaron asilo, pero nuestro sistema funciona de forma desastrosa. En realidad, no ofrece seguridad a la mayor\u00eda de quienes la necesitan. Encontraron una v\u00eda de visa diferente y el gobierno solo tuvo que esperar un poco m\u00e1s para que la consiguieran.<\/p>\n

Pero la administraci\u00f3n Trump no esper\u00f3. Quer\u00eda que Emerson fuera un n\u00famero m\u00e1s en su cuota de deportaci\u00f3n masiva. Pero detr\u00e1s de cada n\u00famero hay una persona. Hay un rostro y una comunidad entera. No son estad\u00edsticas, son seres humanos con esperanzas, sue\u00f1os y dignidad.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Seg\u00fan todos los indicios, Emerson es un gran chico con un futuro brillante por delante. Ohio se quedar\u00e1 fuera, porque Emerson ya no est\u00e1 aqu\u00ed. Esto no ten\u00eda por qu\u00e9 pasar, y no tiene por qu\u00e9 volver a pasarle a nadie. Necesitamos que ICE se vaya de nuestras comunidades. Necesitamos poner fin a los contratos de ICE con las c\u00e1rceles de los condados de Ohio y las fuerzas policiales que permiten deportaciones como esta. No necesitamos proyectos de ley como el SB 172, que solo fomentan m\u00e1s secuestros de miembros de nuestra comunidad de Ohio.
