The 20,000-square-foot building is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The new Washington Branch will anchor an eight-acre campus near Alexis and Tremainsville roads. The site will include walking paths, green space, a new Library operations center and the Friends of the Library warehouse. The building’s design was guided by six key principles: creating a welcoming destination for all ages; exceeding safety and accessibility standards; fostering connections to outdoor spaces; encouraging curiosity through design; and serving as an economic catalyst for the surrounding neighborhood. Planned amenities include natural lighting, curated views of the outdoors, expanded community and study rooms, dedicated children’s areas, comfortable reading spaces and new computers. The building was designed by Bostwick Design Partnership, a Cleveland-based firm that has worked on more than 170 libraries nationwide, including the Toledo Library’s Mott Branch, which reopened in 2019. The Lathrop Company, based in Toledo, is serving as the project’s construction manager. In November 2024, Lucas County voters approved a 1-mill bond issue to support capital improvements across the Toledo Library system. The $153 million investment will fund renovation, expansion or new construction at 19 of the Library’s 20 locations over the next decade.
