E.O.P.A. Toledo\/Lucas County Head Start employees, past & present, celebrated their 60-year reunion on June 28, 2025, @ the Toledo\/Lucas County Metropark: Middlegrounds in Toledo, Ohio. They had food trucks, a DJ, balloons, a huge board you could sign your name and put the number of years you worked at Head Start. In addition, they had alumnus Karen Longstreet, who gave a moving presentation on how Head Start, via her mother or her personally, has impacted her life. She spoke of her Head Start teacher, Ms. Sandra Hall, whom she said was careful, pragmatic, and allowed her to grow and be herself. She said Ms. Hall \u201cran her classroom with poise, dignity, and efficiency.\u201d She said, she \u201cwas a change agent set to establish the fundamentals of education and life in children unknowingly needing her guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n

And this is what Head Start was and continues until today to be all about- it is a program that positively impacts the whole family. Head Start started in the basement of churches in the 1960s as a parent involvement and work\/training federal demonstration grant. It got into the preschool business because, how else could this program educate, train, and get parents involved if it didn\u2019t also care for their children and set an example through mentorship, socialization, education, numerous trainings, and national and state conferences. Head Start, today, can be found all over the U.S. They provide education to parents and children, social services, nutrition education and meals, medical and physical screenings, developmental assessments, parent involvement training and education, and home-based education to families with children less than 5 years old.<\/p>\n

Karen Longstreet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Karen Longstreet says her mother started at Toledo\/Lucas County Head Start as a bus aide, then she was a family service worker, then an assistant teacher, to eventually a lead teacher of a classroom. She said in her presentation that this helped her \u201cgrow as a woman and parent due to what was now her work environment.\u201d She said that during each transition, she would come to the Hamilton building as a grade schooler and watch her mother \u201cbecome the next link to communal greatness.\u201d Over time, she said, she would graduate from high school and eventually return to this same program [Head Start] as a college student and parent.<\/p>\n

You are a product of your environment!<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Ms. Longstreet, she is a product of her environment. She said, in her presentation, that she was \u201cthe product of each bus driver that has told me to sit down, each teacher that has reminded me they\u2019ll tell my mother and ensured I understood the importance of education, each family advocate that inspired a parent to pursue further education,\u201d advocacy, service, and connecting families and students. Each \u201clunch assistant that ensured that I ate, classroom assistant that kept my classrooms balanced, each teacher that thoughtfully planned their lessons to peak my interest.\u201d And \u201ceach administrator that kept the Toledo Head Start program properly trained, connected to the community, and an irreplaceable staple to remember as an employer and program for children and families.\u201d She reminded those in attendance, how important the work of Head Start is to families that can\u2019t afford a comprehensive preschool or daycare, and how Head Start is forever embedded in those who used the services as much as those who worked for E.O.P.A\/Head Start. She said, \u201cThe Head Start Family that has been the backbone of this community, who\u2019s raised, educated, grounded, encouraged, nourished, imparted, spearheaded much success, is the reason for [her] many degrees and certifications.\u201d Ms. Longstreet currently has a Master\u2019s in Education and is pursuing her Principal\u2019s license in Ohio.<\/p>\n

Empleados y ex empleados del E.O.P.A. Toledo\/Lucas County Head Start celebraron su 60.\u00ba aniversario el 28 de junio de 2025 en el Toledo\/Lucas County Metropark: Middlegrounds en Toledo, Ohio. Ten\u00edan camiones de comida, un DJ, globos, y un enorme tablero donde se pod\u00eda firmar y anotar los a\u00f1os de trabajo en Head Start. Adem\u00e1s, la exalumna Karen Longstreet ofreci\u00f3 una conmovedora presentaci\u00f3n sobre Head Start, a trav\u00e9s de su madre o ella personalmente, en su vida. Habl\u00f3 de su maestra de Head Start, la Sra. Sandra Hall, quien, seg\u00fan ella, fue atenta, pragm\u00e1tica, y le permiti\u00f3 crecer y ser ella misma. Dijo que la Sra. Y eso es Head Start: un programa que impacta positivamente a toda la familia. Head Start empez\u00f3 en s\u00f3tanos de iglesias en la d\u00e9cada de 1960 como una subvenci\u00f3n federal de demostraci\u00f3n para la participaci\u00f3n de los padres y para trabajo. Head Start entro en el negocio de la educaci\u00f3n preescolar porque, de qu\u00e9 otra manera puede este programa educar, capacitar, e involucrar a los padres si no se preocupaba por sus hijos y daba ejemplo a trav\u00e9s de la mentor\u00eda, la socializaci\u00f3n, la educaci\u00f3n, con numerosas capacitaciones y conferencias nacionales y estatales. Hoy en d\u00eda, Head Starts est\u00e1n presente en todo los Estados Unidos. Ofrece educaci\u00f3n a padres e hijos, servicios sociales, educaci\u00f3n nutricional y comidas, ex\u00e1menes m\u00e9dicos y f\u00edsicos, evaluaciones del desarrollo, capacitaci\u00f3n y educaci\u00f3n para la participaci\u00f3n de los padres, y educaci\u00f3n en el hogar para familias con ni\u00f1os menores de 5 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n

Seg\u00fan la Sra. Longstreet, ella es producto de su entorno. En su presentaci\u00f3n, afirm\u00f3 que era “el producto de cada conductor de autob\u00fas que me ha dicho que me sentara, de cada maestro que me ha recordado que se lo dir\u00edan a mi madre y se asegur\u00f3 de que comprendiera la importancia de la educaci\u00f3n, de cada defensor familiar que inspir\u00f3 a un padre a continuar su educaci\u00f3n,” la defensa, el servicio y la conexi\u00f3n entre familias y estudiantes. Cada “asistente de almuerzo que se asegur\u00f3 de que comiera, asistente de aula que mantuvo mis clases equilibradas, cada maestro que planific\u00f3 cuidadosamente sus lecciones para despertar mi inter\u00e9s.” Y “cada administrador que mantuvo el programa de Head Start en Toledo debidamente capacitado, conectado con la comunidad y un elemento insustituible para recordar como empleador y programa para ni\u00f1os y familias.” Record\u00f3 a los asistentes la importancia del trabajo de Head Start para las familias que no pueden costear un preescolar o guarder\u00eda integral, y c\u00f3mo Head Start est\u00e1 arraigado para siempre en quienes usaron los servicios tanto como en quienes trabajaron para E.O.P.A\/Head Start. Dijo: “La familia Head Start que ha sido la columna vertebral de esta comunidad, que ha criado, educado, cimentado, alentado, nutrido, impartido y liderado tanto \u00e9xito, es la raz\u00f3n de [sus] muchos t\u00edtulos y certificaciones.” La Sra. Longstreet actualmente tiene una Maestr\u00eda en Educaci\u00f3n y est\u00e1 cursando su licencia de directora en Ohio.<\/p>\n
