This coalition and meeting were held in order to continue building power for immigrant rights in Cleveland Heights that started as a community response to the raid on Cilantro Taqueria in January 2025 and has turned into a movement of people working for immigrant rights. This raid was a catalyst for many to get involved and, according to the members of the Cleveland Heights for Immigrant Rights group, they just kept going. The meeting brought together like-minded organizations and individuals to organize for greater protections and support for immigrants in our home city. According to Akshai Singh of Cleveland Heights for Immigrant Rights, “Within a month of taking office, the [Trump] administration has attacked my neighbors, who feed and nourish our community. I wanted to join my neighbors as we speak and demonstrate that ICE has no place in Cleveland Heights.”

At the coalition meeting, Cleveland Heights for Immigrant Rights shared the policy proposal they will call on Cleveland Heights City Council to pass, and the group provided feedback and input. This feedback will be integrated and shared in meetings with all City Council members and the Mayor with a demand to quickly pass meaningful immigrant rights legislation. Jamie Hickner of Cleveland Heights for Immigrant Rights said they “were deeply encouraged to hear participants voice such strong support for a City Council resolution affirming the rights of all Cleveland Heights immigrants, regardless of their birthplace, ancestry, or immigration status. Our city is proud to be a ‘welcoming city,’ but the times we live in demand more.” Hickner elaborated by saying, “We need a set of robust city policies and community-wide collaborations to protect and support our immigrants. No one should live in fear that they or a family member could be abducted, hidden away in a prison in another state or country, or deported to a foreign land to face violence, persecution, or death.” That sentiment rang true for all attending.

The meeting was so well-attended that chairs and tables had to be added on to accommodate the group multiple times. “But this was not a surprise,” says Sheila Keller of ClvHts4ImmigrantRights. “I grew up here, and I know that the history of our city and the foundation we stand on is one built by coalitions of people like ours who fought for the recognition of the humanity of all people. We fought for these values before, and we are not going to give them up now.” After canvassing local businesses and passing out Know Your Rights (KYR) information, they collected over 70 signatures of local businesses pledging support for immigrants.
