Immigrants\u2019 Scams and Hopes<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a good news, bad news, story.\u00a0 Even though the majority of Americans, up to 70% in some polls, approve and appreciate immigrant populations, some are trying to take advantage of the immigrants\u2019 plight.<\/p>\n

The bad news-scammers. The anti-immigrant climate we are in has many scammers posing as immigration attorneys and taking advantage of immigrants trying to extend their visas, work permits, or expedite their green card applications. On August 27, 2025, the American Bar Association (ABA) issued an alert against these fraudulent immigration law practices. Not only does it drain the limited funds of immigrants, but bad advice makes their situation worse with \u201cvictims vulnerable to detention or removal.\u201d The ABA recommends seeing an attorney face-to-face; reputable attorneys will not contact people via WhatsApps or on-online. Additionally, reputable legal assistance can be sought through the Immigration Advocates Network<\/em> and the American Immigration Lawyers Association.<\/em> \u00a0Before thousands of dollars are spent for assistance with immigration status, make sure it is with a trustworthy source, and not just a referral from a friend or acquaintance. Additionally, others are pushing back by introducing The Dignity Act of 2025 (H.R. 4393) so immigrants are safe from deportation if they have lived here seven years. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Florida) introduced the bill in July 15, 2025 in the House of Representative with co-sponsor by Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas). It is a bipartisan effort to strengthen border security while providing undocumented individuals with an opportunity to obtain legal status. \u201cThis bipartisan effort comes as new polling indicates that eight out of ten Americans believe immigration is a good thing for the U.S. and support allowing undocumented immigrants to earn legal status if they meet certain requirements over a period of time. (One goal is to eliminate the green card backlog by 2035 by creating an optional fast-track program for green card applicants who have been waiting for 10 years or more.) On August 6, 2025 Rep. Salazar posted an update that the Dignity Act of 2025 (H.R. 4393) has \u201cgained significant momentum, receiving endorsements from over 30 stakeholder groups nationwide. Support now comes from a broad coalition of faith-based organizations, business associations, farmers, veterans, and immigration advocacy organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Additionally, \u201cThe Dignity Act is a revolutionary bill that offers the solution to our immigration crisis: secure the border, stop illegal immigration, and provide an earned opportunity for long-term immigrants to stay here and work,” said Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar. “No amnesty. No handouts. No citizenship. Estafas y esperanzas de inmigrantes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Es una buena noticia, pero tambi\u00e9n una mala noticia. Aunque la mayor\u00eda de los estadounidenses, hasta el 70% en algunas encuestas, aprueba y aprecia a las poblaciones inmigrantes, algunos intentan aprovecharse de su dif\u00edcil situaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Las malas noticias: los estafadores. El clima antiinmigrante en el que vivimos ha provocado que muchos estafadores se hagan pasar por abogados de inmigraci\u00f3n y se aprovechen de los inmigrantes que intentan extender sus visas, permisos de trabajo o agilizar sus solicitudes de residencia permanente. El 27 de agosto de 2025, la Asociaci\u00f3n Americana de Abogados (ABA, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) emiti\u00f3 una alerta contra estas pr\u00e1cticas fraudulentas en materia de leyes de inmigraci\u00f3n. No solo agotan los limitados recursos de los inmigrantes, sino que los malos consejos empeoran su situaci\u00f3n, con v\u00edctimas vulnerables a la detenci\u00f3n o la expulsi\u00f3n. La ABA recomienda consultar con un abogado en persona; los abogados con buena reputaci\u00f3n no contactar\u00e1n a las personas por WhatsApp ni en l\u00ednea. Adem\u00e1s, se puede buscar asistencia legal confiable a trav\u00e9s de la Red de Defensores de la Inmigraci\u00f3n y la Asociaci\u00f3n Americana de Abogados de Inmigraci\u00f3n.
