According to recent data from state-specific sources and the Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Ohio Chapter (2025), an estimated 67,000 people in Ohio are living with Lupus, and women and people of color are hit the hardest. Lupus, also known as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), is a \u201cchronic autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and organs\u201d (www.mayoclinic.org). The exact causes of lupus are unknown; however, genetics, the environment, and hormonal imbalances may be factors. According to the Mayo Clinic (2025), lupus affects various organs and systems that can lead to \u201cjoint pain and swelling, fatigue, skin rashes (i.e., butterfly rashes on the face), fever, sensitivity to the sun, kidney problems, heart inflammation, brain fog, and or memory problems.\u201d And there is no cure for lupus, yet, treatments do exist and can help manage the symptoms and prevent organ damage, as do educational and prevention programs such as Nuestra Gente Community Projects, right here in Toledo, Ohio.<\/p>\n

Nuestra Gente Community Projects has a Lupus Awareness Program.<\/strong> This program aims to increase awareness and education about lupus in Lucas County, specifically in the Latinx community it serves. They offer bilingual (English\/Spanish) lupus support and education. This includes monthly support groups where participants are provided a space to share their experiences, ask questions, find emotional support, and, during Lupus Awareness Month, which is in May, they offer numerous other activities. Nuestra Gente\u2019s Lupus program was created as an inspiration and support for one of our local Latina artists, Delfina Zapata,<\/strong> who suffers from this disease.<\/p>\n

Seg\u00fan datos recientes del estatales y de la Fundaci\u00f3n Lupus de Am\u00e9rica, Greater Ohio Chapter (2025), se estima que 67,000 personas en Ohio viven con lupus, y las mujeres y las personas de color son las m\u00e1s afectadas. El lupus, tambi\u00e9n conocido como Lupus Eritematoso Sist\u00e9mico (LES), \u201ces una enfermedad autoinmune cr\u00f3nica en la que el sistema inmunitario ataca por error tejidos y \u00f3rganos sanos\u201d (www.mayoclinic.org). Y no existe cura para el lupus, existen tratamientos que pueden ayudar a controlar los s\u00edntomas y prevenir da\u00f1os en los \u00f3rganos, al igual que programas educativos y de prevenci\u00f3n como los Proyectos Comunitarios de Nuestra Gente, aqu\u00ed en Toledo, Ohio.<\/p>\n

Los Proyectos Comunitarios de Nuestra Gente cuentan con un Programa de Concientizaci\u00f3n sobre el Lupus.<\/strong> Este programa busca aumentar la concientizaci\u00f3n y la educaci\u00f3n sobre el lupus en el condado de Lucas, espec\u00edficamente en la comunidad Latinx a la que sirve. Ofrecen apoyo y educaci\u00f3n biling\u00fces (ingl\u00e9s\/espa\u00f1ol) sobre el lupus. Esto incluye grupos de apoyo mensuales donde los participantes tienen un espacio para compartir sus experiencias, hacer preguntas, encontrar apoyo emocional y, durante el Mes de Concientizaci\u00f3n sobre el Lupus, que se celebra en mayo, ofrecen numerosas otras actividades.
