What if that mortgage-free home was ranch-style, where you cared for your elderly, disabled spouse? What if ODOT\u2019s first plan included six more families\u2019 homes on your street to be destroyed?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>After much worry of losing your home, would you feel true relief that, under public pressure, ODOT changed the plan, left your home intact, but shifted planned property takings onto others in nearby neighborhoods, leaving those families now with similar concerns? <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Could you tolerate repeatedly absorbing repair costs from cracked walls and foundations already caused by vibrations from trucking and speeding vehicle traffic passing by your home every day on this nearby highway? Will damages exponentially increase if the highway were expanded all the way to your property boundary and beyond? <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When it\u2019s known that hearing loss can begin with noise levels at 70 decibels, would you be concerned in your backyard, already confined behind a highway noise wall, that noise measurements currently peak at 110dB? What if decibels registered peaks of 102 inside a different home by the highway? What if both of those readings occurred around sunup? Or if noise disrupted gatherings on your property, forcing conversations to compete with noise equivalent to a lawnmower?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Would you be delighted to postpone upgrades or even needed repairs to your home for six years or more until learning whether your property value will depreciate with a highway expansion?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The above accounts are from real residents now living in West Toledo and Sylvania Township neighborhoods surrounding Interstate 475, five-miles in length from Douglas Road to US-23 and through some of the most densely residential neighborhoods on metro-Toledo\u2019s beltway. <strong>These neighborhoods are now threatened with ODOT\u2019s plan to expand the highway, widening it to six lanes for the length, except for the eight lanes planned in the segment between Secor and Talmadge Roads. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This article is one of five articles that La Prensa, Inc. will be publishing in the following weeks, written by Peggy Daly-Masternak, the Coordinator for the I-475 Neighborhoods Coalition, that discusses the impacts of this expansion.
