Event attendees received a private tour of the El Sue\u00f1o Americano\/The American Dream exhibit, a book talk and signing by acclaimed author Ruth Behar, and a capstone celebration of the community conversation series. According to Richard Levitz, a member of the Community Relations Committee, the purpose of this event was to engage in an \u201chonest conversation between our Hispanic\/Latino and Jewish communities\u201d that \u201caffirms the opportunity for true bridge building rooted in trust and mutual respect.\u201d The event chair, Mariely Luengo, said, \u201cNow is the time to deepen our connections with our allies\u201d and \u201cto reestablish the Latino-Jewish Roundtable,\u201d which would create \u201cmeaningful relationships dedicated to shared advocacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jewtina, the vibrant, global community dedicated to uplifting the unique histories, identities, and cultures of Latin-Jews, hosted an engaging conversation with author Ruth Behar discussing her Newbery Medal novel, <em>Across So Many Seas<\/em>. Spanning over five hundred years, Pura Belpr\u00e9 Award winner Ruth Behar\u2019s novel tells the stories of four girls from different generations of a Jewish family, many of them forced to immigrate to a new country to start over.<\/p>\n<p>El Sue\u00f1o Americano\/ The American Dream exhibit documents the migrant experience at the U.S.\/Mexico border by photographer Tom Kiefer. Kiefer\u2019s still life photographs of the countless items confiscated from migrants that were deemed \u201cnon-essential\u201d or \u201cpotentially lethal\u201d bring humanity to the viewer. The exhibition features nearly 300 works, along with a revealing selection of migrant belongings. For the first time, the exhibition will also feature contemporary Mexican American artist Elizabeth Z. Pineda, whose artwork explores complex issues related to immigration.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit and the author talk are examples of the Hispanic and Jewish communities&#8217; deep cultural footprints and impact on the United States.
