Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence<\/em><\/strong> @ Riverside Church in NYC<\/strong><\/p>\n

New York, New York- The annual commemoration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.\u2019s speech, Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence,<\/em> was held on April 4, 2026, at 3 pm at Riverside Church in New York City. This event was filled with people from diverse peace movements, including Union Seminary staff, students, alumni, and people, such as myself, who traveled to the event from Ohio. The event started outside with a drum and song circle, as everyone sang songs, danced, and played instruments to music like \u201cThis Little Light of Mine,\u201d which was also sung as we all walked from the song circle in the center of Union Theological Seminary, which is part of Columbia University, to Riverside Church.<\/p>\n

Once in the church, everyone lined up for a procession and walked into the church, filling all the pews and stage with either presenters, participants, or attendees. In attendance were academics such as Cornel West, Michelle Alexander, Lucas Johnson, a long time Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR)-USA<\/strong> and the International Fellowship of Reconciliation (IFOR) <\/strong>member, and Krista Tippett<\/strong> of the podcast, On Being<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This event was similar to the \u201cBreaking the Silence\u201d event held here in Toledo, Ohio, annually, at the Monroe Street Church (3613 Monroe St., Toledo, Ohio). And I was glad that I had participated in so many of the readings in Toledo, because when I went to this event I could tell the slight differences in the presentation and learned that Rev. Dr. Vincent Harding and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote the \u201cBeyond Vietnam\u201d speech together, and that not one pastor was present when Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave this speech in this same Riverside Church on April 4, 1967. The speech addresses war and the opposition to it. It speaks of nonviolence, conscientious objection, and opposition to militarism. This \u201cHoly Saturday\u201d marked the\u00a059th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s \u201cBeyond Vietnam\u201d speech,<\/strong> which was crafted by historian, activist, and beloved teacher\u00a0Vincent Harding<\/strong>.<\/strong> The gathering asked the question Harding posed to this nation, and that is so pertinent to today:\u00a0Is America Possible?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 2026 Toledo MLK “Our Time to Break Silence: A Call to Action” event is scheduled for\u00a0Sunday, April 19, 2026, at 3:00 PM (EDT) at the Monroe Street Church, 3613 Monroe St., Toledo, Ohio.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nueva York, Nueva York- La conmemoraci\u00f3n anual del discurso del reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de Vietnam: Un tiempo para romper el silencio, <\/em>se celebr\u00f3 el 4 de abril de 2026 a las 15:00 horas en la Iglesia Riverside de la ciudad de Nueva York. Este evento estuvo lleno de personas de diversos movimientos pacifistas, incluyendo personal del Seminario Uni\u00f3n, estudiantes, alumnos y, como yo, que viaj\u00e9 desde Ohio al evento. El evento comenz\u00f3 al aire libre con un c\u00edrculo de tambores y canciones, mientras todos cantaban canciones, bailaban y tocaban instrumentos a m\u00fasica como “This Little Light of Mine,” que tambi\u00e9n se cantaba mientras todos camin\u00e1bamos desde el c\u00edrculo de canciones en el centro del Union Theological Seminary, que forma parte de la Universidad de Columbia, hasta la Iglesia Riverside.<\/p>\n

Y me alegr\u00e9 de haber participado en tantas lecturas en Toledo, porque cuando fui a este evento pude notar las peque\u00f1as diferencias en la presentaci\u00f3n y no supe que el Reverendo Dr. Vincent Harding y el Reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. escribieron juntos el discurso “M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de Vietnam,” y que no hab\u00eda ni un solo pastor presente cuando el Reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King,\u00a0 Jr. pronunci\u00f3 este discurso en esta misma iglesia de Riverside el 4 de abril de 1967. El discurso aborda la guerra y la oposici\u00f3n a ella. Habla de no violencia, objeci\u00f3n de conciencia y oposici\u00f3n al militarismo. Este “S\u00e1bado Santo” marc\u00f3 el 59\u00ba aniversario del discurso “M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de Vietnam” del Reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,<\/strong> elaborado por el historiador, activista y querido profesor Vincent Harding<\/strong>.<\/strong> La reuni\u00f3n plante\u00f3 la pregunta que Harding plante\u00f3 a esta naci\u00f3n, y que es tan pertinente para hoy: \u00bfEs posible los Estados Unidos?<\/strong><\/p>\n
