{"id":166,"date":"2022-03-02T16:07:33","date_gmt":"2022-03-02T16:07:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/?p=166"},"modified":"2022-03-03T15:07:30","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T15:07:30","slug":"toledo-mayor-debuts-kid-mayor-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/index.php\/2022\/03\/02\/toledo-mayor-debuts-kid-mayor-council\/","title":{"rendered":"Toledo Mayor Debuts Kid Mayor, Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-167 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/p.-5-mayor-kids-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/p.-5-mayor-kids-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/p.-5-mayor-kids.jpg 504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>By La Prensa Staff<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toledo\u2019s mayor introduced a kid version of the executive and legislative branches of city government Feb. 16, 2022, a group of 13 fourth-graders who will learn how to make policy and get a firsthand look at municipal operations over the next year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 8- to 10-year-olds from\u00a0<em>Toledo Public Schools<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Washington Local Schools<\/em>\u00a0also will learn about community partnerships and make a policy recommendation at the end of their term.\u00a0The Kid Mayor and Kid Council met the mayor, attended their first\u00a0<em>Toledo City Council<\/em>\u00a0meeting and enjoyed a meal together during their first session.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese kids, while between 8-10 years old, are individually impacted by very serious issues in our community, not least of which is gun violence,\u201d said\u00a0<em>Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz<\/em>\u00a0in his weekly community newsletter. \u201cOur new Kid Mayor is in the same class as\u00a0<em>Damia Ezell,<\/em>\u00a0a 10-year-old Toledo girl, who was shot and killed while riding in a car with her uncle last week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the mayor\u2019s office, hundreds of kids from both school districts applied to be members of Kid Council.\u00a0The top 13 candidates were selected by their schools and then interviewed by a panel of community leaders to choose the Kid Mayor<em>, Evelyn Bush<\/em>, who attends Glenwood Elementary School. Ms. Bush later led the mayor on a tour of her school, where he read the morning announcements with her help.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI look forward to seeing what these talented young people can do in our city,\u201d the mayor said in a Facebook post. Mayor Kapsukiewicz also introduced the Kid Mayor and Kid Council via social media, hosting a press conference broadcast on Facebook Live.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Members of the Kid Council include<\/em>: \u00a0Elliott Worthington, Hailey Dixon, and Elizabeth Kushlan, who each attend Beverly Elementary; Tyler Brister of Birmingham Elementary; Alayah Wappner of DeVeaux Elementary; John Russell Taylor of Marshall STEM Academy; Caylee Simmons of Hiawatha Elementary; Aubree Heaton of Jackman Elementary; Tahj Bannister and Broolyn Berrios, who attend McGregor Elementary; Michael Aiken of Meadowvale Elementary; and Peyten Peters of Greenwood Elementary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth graders will meet quarterly for the rest of the year.
