In fact, skin cancer is often missed in people of color. A local dermatologist explains what patients are overlooking.

Perrysburg, Ohio — Many patients with darker skin tones believe they are not at risk for skin cancer. According to Dr. Hope Mitchell of Mitchell Dermatology, that assumption is one of the biggest reasons diagnoses are delayed.

“Skin cancer is less common in people of color, but when I do diagnose it, it’s often at a later stage,” said Dr. Mitchell. “That’s where it becomes more serious.” One reason is that it doesn’t always show up where patients expect. “In darker skin tones, we often see skin cancer on the palms, the soles of the feet, or under the nails,” she said. “Those are areas most people are not checking.” Dr. Mitchell says many patients dismiss early warning signs because they do not associate them with skin cancer. “If something is new, changing, or not healing, it’s worth having it looked at,” she said. “I see patients wait longer than they should because it didn’t look concerning to them.” During Skin Cancer Awareness Month in May, she is encouraging patients to become more familiar with their skin and to pay attention to subtle changes. Mitchell Dermatology, with offices in Perrysburg and Fremont, provides medical and cosmetic dermatology services, including comprehensive skin evaluations and skin cancer screenings. Dr. Mitchell treats patients across a wide range of skin types and emphasizes that awareness plays a critical role in early detection. “The goal isn’t fear,” she said. “It’s awareness.
