This facility, or better yet, warehouse, is run by The GEO Group and overseen by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It has become a central focal point for protests due to their inhumane treatment of the immigrants, including a lack of medical care, food, overcrowding, and a lack of due process. Many detainees have been in this facility for over a year.

The day we arrived was the day after law and immigration enforcement, with The GEO Group’s security officers, had just destroyed the volunteer tent in the “Free Speech Zone,” pepper-sprayed, shoved, and shot rubber pellets at all the protesters, clergy, volunteers, and anyone present at the time. We arrived as the clean-up crew to witness and to be in solidarity with those trying to do what is ethically and morally right, and in accordance with our faith. As we walked towards the tent, it was apparent they had been raided by enforcement officers (pictured here).

You could feel the pepper-spray on your face like a sunburn, and even though I was wearing a mask, it still burned right through it. And all the supplies that were once collected for the families waiting to visit their detained loved ones were now just tossed on the ground and covered with this dark gray pepper-spray film that by the time we got done picking everything up and tossing them in trash bags, my double-lined gloves were filthy, dirty, and black. The air smelled of trash and dead animals, as I would learn later, is because this area has a dead animal licensed solid waste landfill and dump nearby.

On this particular day, the day after the pepper-spray, everyone from reporters of local public media to CNN, and anyone else present, was asking what more can we do to show our support nonviolently. It was nothing like the television would like to portray the protest going on outside of Delaney Hall. It was mostly clergy, community activists, and immigrant families just trying to give what they could physically, verbally, and spiritually to those detained, their families, and the world that is now watching patiently and praying that Newark doesn’t turn into a Minneapolis.

The people present are trying to help in any way they can, whether it be through their presence, marching, and or helping, playing the drum, chalking the streets with messages like “No More ICE,” or reporting and witnessing what is happening so others can know the truth. This ongoing presence is organized by Eyes on ICE New Jersey, First Friends of New Jersey, and many others.
