Not because mental health issues are only important in May, but because it\u2019s one of the few times people actually discuss them out loud.<\/p>\n<p>Those conversations are constant in my work with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) here in Greater Toledo. Parents trying to help their kids navigate adolescence, families looking for support, young people feeling overwhelmed without always being able to explain why. One topic has been creeping into these conversations lately and there\u2019s usually a fair amount of frustration behind it: screen time.<\/p>\n<p>You hear it everywhere. Kids are spending too much time glued to devices. They\u2019re not spending enough time in the \u201creal\u201d world. I don\u2019t think parents are wrong to worry. But I do think we\u2019re flattening the issue a bit too much.<\/p>\n<p>Not all screen time looks the same. You can see that pretty quickly if you sit down and actually watch what kids are doing. Some of it is mindless, no question about it. But some of it is actually mindful.<\/p>\n<p>Take Roblox. Most adults hear that and think \u201cit\u2019s just a game.\u201d Spend just a few minutes actually watching them and you might realize something. Kids aren\u2019t just playing. They\u2019re creating their own spaces, building exposure to coding and AI, learning through trial and error by testing ideas that don\u2019t always work and collaborating with friends to solve problems in real-time.<\/p>\n<p>That kind of engagement empowers kids to be active creators, not just passive consumers. You can see the shift in their attitudes when kids are making something. They care more, stick with it longer, and don\u2019t give up if frustrated by working through it. There\u2019s a sense of pride and accomplishment there when things finally click into place. That feeling is important for young people. It\u2019s tied to confidence, and that\u2019s a big piece of mental health.<\/p>\n<p>None of this means there aren\u2019t downsides. There are. Too much time online can mess with sleep. It can crowd out other priorities if no one\u2019s paying attention. Parents aren\u2019t imagining that. But if we only talk about what\u2019s wrong, we miss what\u2019s actually helping some kids, particularly as we all adjust to a more digital-forward world.<\/p>\n<p>Screens aren\u2019t going anywhere. That\u2019s just the reality now. So, the better question is what kids are doing with that time and whether it\u2019s giving them something in return.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where we come in. Parents and teachers don\u2019t have to understand every platform but we should at least be curious. Sit down with them for a bit. Ask if you can see what they\u2019re working on. Watch how they interact. Keep the door open instead of shutting it (and your child) out.<\/p>\n<p>We should also be a little more intentional about what we encourage. Some spaces are built to keep kids scrolling. Others push them to think, create and work with other people. That\u2019s an important distinction. Mental Health Awareness Month is a good reminder for us all to pay attention to what\u2019s shaping our kids today. And more and more of that is happening online.<\/p>\n<p>We can keep fighting that or we can get smarter about it. We need to watch where kids are spending their time and point them toward spaces that actually give something back. That feels like a better solution than just telling them to log off entirely. It\u2019s certainly a more practical one.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Repensar el tiempo de pantalla durante el Mes de la Concienciaci\u00f3n sobre la\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Salud Mental<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lisa Caneles-Smith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>El Mes de la Concienciaci\u00f3n sobre la Salud Mental siempre hace que me detenga a pensar. No porque los problemas de salud mental solo sean importantes en mayo, sino porque es una de las pocas veces que la gente habla de ellos.<\/p>\n<p>Esas conversaciones son constantes en mi trabajo con NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) aqu\u00ed en Greater Toledo. Padres que intentan ayudar a sus hijos a navegar por la adolescencia, familias que buscan apoyo, j\u00f3venes que se sienten abrumados sin poder explicar siempre por qu\u00e9. Hay un tema que ha sido recurrente en estas conversaciones \u00faltimamente y la verdad es que hay bastante frustraci\u00f3n al respecto: el tiempo en pantalla.<\/p>\n<p>Lo oyen en todas partes. Los ni\u00f1os pasan demasiado tiempo pegados a los dispositivos. No pasan suficiente tiempo en el mundo \u201creal\u201d. No creo que los padres est\u00e9n equivocados al preocuparse. Pero creo que estamos simplificando demasiado el problema.<\/p>\n<p>El tiempo en pantalla no debe medirse con la misma vara. Se ve r\u00e1pidamente al observar lo que hacen los ni\u00f1os. Una parte es bastante superficial, es cierto. Pero otra es en realidad consciente.<\/p>\n<p>Por ejemplo, Roblox. La mayor\u00eda de los adultos oyen eso y piensan que \u201ces solo un juego\u201d. Dediquen solo unos minutos a verlos y es posible que se den cuenta de algo.<\/p>\n<p>Los ni\u00f1os no solo juegan. Est\u00e1n creando sus propios espacios, creando exposici\u00f3n a la codificaci\u00f3n y la IA, aprendiendo a trav\u00e9s de pruebas y errores probando ideas que no siempre funcionan y colaborando con amigos para resolver problemas en tiempo real.<\/p>\n<p>Este tipo de compromiso permite a los ni\u00f1os ser creadores activos, no solo consumidores pasivos. Se puede ver el cambio en su actitud cuando los ni\u00f1os hacen algo. Se preocupan m\u00e1s, se quedan m\u00e1s tiempo y no se rinden si se sienten frustrados al trabajar en ello. Hay un sentimiento de orgullo y logro cuando las cosas finalmente funcionan. Esa sensaci\u00f3n es importante para los j\u00f3venes. Est\u00e1 ligada a la confianza, y eso es una gran parte de la salud mental.<\/p>\n<p>Nada de esto significa que no haya inconvenientes. Los hay. Demasiado tiempo en l\u00ednea puede alterar el sue\u00f1o. Puede restarle tiempo a otras prioridades si nadie presta atenci\u00f3n. No es producto de la imaginaci\u00f3n de los padres. Pero si solo hablamos de lo que est\u00e1 mal, nos perdemos lo que realmente est\u00e1 ayudando a algunos ni\u00f1os,<\/p>\n<p>especialmente a medida que todos nos adaptamos a un mundo m\u00e1s digital.<\/p>\n<p>Las pantallas no van a desaparecer. Esa es la realidad. Entonces, la pregunta m\u00e1s importante es qu\u00e9 est\u00e1n haciendo los ni\u00f1os con ese tiempo y si realmente est\u00e1n obteniendo algo a cambio.<\/p>\n<p>Ah\u00ed es donde entramos nosotros. Los padres y profesores no tienen que entender todas las plataformas, pero al menos deben tener curiosidad. Deben sentarse con ellos un rato. Preguntarles si pueden ver en qu\u00e9 est\u00e1n trabajando. Observen c\u00f3mo interact\u00faan. Mantengan la puerta abierta en lugar de cerrarla (y as\u00ed excluir a su hijo).<\/p>\n<p>Tambi\u00e9n deber\u00edamos ser un poco m\u00e1s intencionales sobre lo que alentamos. Algunos espacios est\u00e1n dise\u00f1ados para mantener a los ni\u00f1os scrolleando. Otros los incentivan a pensar, crear y trabajar con otras personas. Esa es una distinci\u00f3n importante. El Mes de la Concienciaci\u00f3n sobre la Salud Mental es un buen recordatorio para que todos prestemos atenci\u00f3n a lo que est\u00e1 formando a nuestros hijos hoy en d\u00eda. Y, cada vez m\u00e1s, eso est\u00e1 sucediendo en el mundo digital.<\/p>\n<p>Podemos seguir luchando contra eso o podemos ser m\u00e1s inteligentes al respecto.<\/p>\n<p>Tenemos que ver d\u00f3nde pasan el tiempo los ni\u00f1os y orientarlos hacia espacios que realmente les devuelvan algo. Eso parece una mejor soluci\u00f3n que simplemente decirles que cierren sesi\u00f3n para siempre.
