As the world is tuned in to the World Cup, I\u2019m thinking about the fact that this event wouldn\u2019t be possible without Latinos. And still, in the U.S., we are frequently told we don\u2019t belong. But we are not guests, or whatever slur someone hurls at us. We are co-authors of this nation. And as we approach our country\u2019s 250th anniversary, we are re-claiming our role.<\/p>\n

Latinos: The Backbone of the World Cup<\/strong>
\nIn this year\u2019s World Cup, Mexico hosts 13 matches. Los Angeles, Miami, and Houston \u2014 home to millions of Latinos \u2014 also welcome teams. Latinos play on the field; cheer in the stands; and staff concessions, cleaning crews, and the hospitality industry.
\nThink about the food and beer that fans enjoy. Latinos were involved in its harvesting, processing, transportation, preparation, and delivery. \u201cAs much as these systems and our labor can be politicized, food itself transcends politics and reminds us of our common humanity,\u201d wrote Michele Cantos Garcia. Still, Latinos\u2019 role in the U.S. is often questioned. We\u2019re not going to change who we are, but we have to change whose stories and leadership are recognized.<\/p>\n

Our Shared Home and History<\/strong>
\nIt takes extraordinary courage to leave your country. To step into unfamiliar languages, systems, and often complete isolation. No safety net. Just the responsibility to protect your family and endure. That decision is rooted in resilience and the belief that hard work can build a future. This is the story of millions of Latino immigrants.
\nThere are also Latinos in the U.S. whose families never crossed a border. Long before those lines were drawn, this land was home to Indigenous civilizations whose knowledge, labor, and culture shaped the Americas. Spanish-speaking communities settled in St. Augustine and Santa Fe before the U.S. claimed territories across the Southwest, Florida, and the Caribbean.
\nAfter the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, families who lived on the land for generations were redefined as \u201cothers.\u201d But despite that erasure, Latinos in the U.S. persisted. We built farms, railroads, cities, and movements. We fought on behalf of the U.S. in wars since this nation\u2019s founding, and continue to do so today. Latino history is American history.<\/p>\n

More Than a Demographic<\/strong>
\nEighty-percent of U.S. Latinos are citizens. But regardless of our citizenship status, this country is home. We are more than a voting bloc or demographic. Latinos are educators and entrepreneurs. Scientists and doctors. Farmworkers and engineers. Journalists, artists, caregivers, builders, and business owners. We are first responders running toward danger. We organize, vote, and govern. We serve in local offices, statehouses, and Congress.
\nPeople of Latin American heritage generate more than $4.1 trillion annually for the U.S. economy. Latino-owned businesses are the fastest-growing segment of entrepreneurs nationwide. Latinos do have power, and need to exercise it. We must demand accountability from political leaders who exploit fear, and from corporations that profit from our communities while retreating when courage is needed.<\/p>\n

Here to Stay<\/strong>
\nAs the nation debates immigration, voting rights, and corporate responsibility, and gets ready to celebrate its 250th anniversary, Latinos are once again treated as a question mark instead of a constant. Even visitors coming to this country to cheer on their teams in the World Cup, and spend money at our hotels and restaurants, have to be on guard. The Guardian wrote:
\nMore than 120 civil society groups have even issued a travel warning to the 10 million potential visitors about \u201cserious rights violations\u201d under the current political climate, including \u201carbitrary denial of entry and risk of arrest, detention and\/or deportation.\u201d
\nThese are incredible times.
\nAt the 2026 World Cup, soccer players with Spanish, Indigenous, and African roots are here representing Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Haiti, Portugal, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay, Spain, and the United States. And I\u2019m wondering, do people really see us? Do they understand none of this is possible, without Latinos?
\nTwo hundred and fifty years after the founding of this nation, our nation, the United States is still our home. It\u2019s time for everyone in this country \u2014 including those who occupy the highest of government offices \u2014 to realize that.<\/p>\n

Mientras el mundo tiene la mirada puesta en la Copa del Mundo, reflexiono sobre el hecho de que este evento no ser\u00eda posible sin los latinos. \nPensemos por un momento en la comida y la cerveza que disfrutan los aficionados. Los latinos han participado en su cosecha, procesamiento, transporte, preparaci\u00f3n y reparto. \u201cPor m\u00e1s que se politicen estos sistemas y nuestra mano de obra, la comida en s\u00ed trasciende la pol\u00edtica y nos recuerda nuestra humanidad compartida\u201d, escribi\u00f3 Michele Cantos Garc\u00eda. Solo con la responsabilidad de proteger a tu familia y resistir. Esa decisi\u00f3n est\u00e1 arraigada en la resiliencia y en la convicci\u00f3n de que el trabajo duro puede construir un futuro. Esta es la historia de millones de inmigrantes latinos.
\nPero tambi\u00e9n hay latinos en los EE. UU. cuyas familias nunca cruzaron una frontera. Mucho antes de que se trazaran esas l\u00edneas divisorias, esta tierra ya era el hogar de civilizaciones ind\u00edgenas cuyos conocimientos, trabajo y cultura moldearon el continente americano. Tras el Tratado de Guadalupe Hidalgo, las familias que hab\u00edan habitado estas tierras por generaciones fueron redefinidas como \u201clos otros\u201d. A pesar de ese intento de borrar nuestra historia, los latinos en los EE. UU. persistimos. Construimos granjas, v\u00edas de tren, ciudades y movimientos sociales. Hemos luchado en el frente de batalla por los Estados Unidos en cada guerra desde la fundaci\u00f3n de esta naci\u00f3n, y lo seguimos haciendo hoy. La historia latina es la historia estadounidense.<\/p>\n

M\u00e1s que un grupo demogr\u00e1fico<\/strong>
\nEl 80% de los latinos en los EE. UU. son ciudadanos. Pero m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de cualquier estatus migratorio, este pa\u00eds es nuestro hogar. Somos mucho m\u00e1s que un bloque de votantes o una simple estad\u00edstica. Los latinos somos educadores y emprendedores. Cient\u00edficos y m\u00e9dicos. Campesinos e ingenieros. Periodistas, artistas, cuidadores, constructores y due\u00f1os de negocios. Somos los primeros en responder ante las emergencias. Nos organizamos, votamos y gobernamos. Servimos en oficinas locales, legislaturas estatales y en el Congreso.
\nLas personas de origen latinoamericano generan m\u00e1s de $4.1 trillones anuales para la econom\u00eda de los EE. UU. Adem\u00e1s, los negocios latinos son el segmento empresarial de m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido crecimiento en todo el pa\u00eds. Los latinos tenemos un poder real, un poder que se siente, y es hora de ejercerlo. Debemos exigir rendici\u00f3n de cuentas tanto a los l\u00edderes pol\u00edticos que se aprovechan del miedo como a las grandes empresas que lucran con nuestras comunidades, pero que se esconden cuando se necesita valent\u00eda.<\/p>\n

Llegamos para quedarnos<\/strong>
\nMientras el pa\u00eds debate sobre inmigraci\u00f3n, derechos electorales y responsabilidad corporativa, y se prepara para celebrar su 250 aniversario, a los latinos se nos vuelve a tratar como un signo de interrogaci\u00f3n en lugar de una constante. Incluso los turistas que vienen a apoyar a sus equipos en el Mundial y a gastar su dinero en nuestros hoteles y restaurantes tienen que estar alerta. El diario The Guardian se\u00f1al\u00f3:
\nM\u00e1s de 120 organizaciones de la sociedad civil han emitido una alerta de viaje para los 10 millones de visitantes potenciales, advirtiendo sobre \u201cgraves violaciones de derechos\u201d bajo el contexto pol\u00edtico actual, incluyendo la \u201cdenegaci\u00f3n arbitraria de entrada y el riesgo de arresto, detenci\u00f3n y\/o deportaci\u00f3n\u201d.<\/p>\n

Estamos viviendo un contexto sin precedentes.<\/strong>
\nEn esta Copa del Mundo de 2026, futbolistas con ra\u00edces hispanas, ind\u00edgenas y africanas representan con orgullo a Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, Hait\u00ed, Portugal, Ecuador, Panam\u00e1, Paraguay, Uruguay, Espa\u00f1a y los Estados Unidos. Y yo me pregunto: \u00bfrealmente nos ve la sociedad? \u00bfEntienden que nada de esto ser\u00eda posible sin los latinos?
\nDoscientos cincuenta a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s de la fundaci\u00f3n de esta naci\u00f3n, nuestra naci\u00f3n, Estados Unidos sigue siendo nuestro hogar. Ya es hora de que todos en este pa\u00eds, incluyendo a quienes ocupan los cargos m\u00e1s altos del gobierno, se den cuenta de ello.<\/p>\n
