MICHIGAN, July 2, 2026:\u00a0 Recent polling conducted by Progress Michigan in partnership with Public Policy Polling shows that Michiganders overall are supportive of a universal, single-payer health care system. This is timely as the one year anniversary for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is coming up on July 4. The bill is predicted to cut as many as 355,000 Michigan residents from Medicaid due to enhanced work requirements and administrative policy changes. Speaker Hall\u2019s proposed budget in the Michigan House includes cuts and changes to the Department of Health and Human Services that would drive more people to lose essential health coverage.<\/p>\n

\u201cMichigan families are facing intense financial pressure from the high costs of basic necessities like housing, food, and gas,\u201d said Justin Mendoza, executive director of Progress Michigan. \u201cCongressional Republicans made matters worse when they passed HR1 in 2025, causing many who previously received ACA subsidies to see their health insurance premiums double this year, and set in motion major cuts to Medicaid programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe relief isn\u2019t coming in the Michigan House budget either, where Speaker Hall has proposed major cuts to enrollment assistance and other programmatic staff that help people enroll in Medicaid and other essential services,\u201d continued Mendoza. \u201cThousands of Michiganders may see their health care stripped away due to these actions, but it doesn\u2019t have to be this way. Michiganders support a single-payer system that would bring stability to working families.\u201d<\/p>\n
