LANSING, Mich., <\/strong>June 24, 2022: Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued the following statement after the United States Supreme Court issued a ruling in\u00a0Dobbs v Jackson<\/em>\u00a0overturning\u00a0Roe v Wade<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday is a sad day for America\u00a0as an unelected group of conservative judges act squarely against the will of the people and medical expertise.\u00a0We can all sense the despair that tens of millions of Americans\u2014our neighbors, family members and friends\u2014are feeling right now.\u00a0However,\u00a0we personally feel about abortion,\u00a0health\u2014not\u00a0politics\u2014should\u00a0drive important medical decisions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith\u00a0today’s\u00a0decision,\u00a0Michigan’s\u00a0antiquated 1931\u00a0law\u00a0banning abortion without exceptions for rape or incest and criminalizing doctors and nurses\u00a0who provide reproductive care\u00a0takes\u00a0effect. For now, a Michigan court has\u00a0put a\u00a0temporary\u00a0hold on\u00a0the\u00a0law,\u00a0but that decision\u00a0is not final and\u00a0has\u00a0already\u00a0been\u00a0challenged.\u00a0The 1931 law would punish women and strip away their right to make decisions about their own bodies.\u00a0I am deeply disappointed that Michigan\u2019s Republican legislative leaders have been in court defending this draconian ban, to the detriment of women and families.\u00a0Some legislators\u00a0have gone a step further, proposing a 10-year prison sentence for abortion providers\u00a0and a 20-year sentence for anyone manufacturing, selling or distributing birth control medication.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want every Michigander to know that I am more determined than ever to protect access to safe, legal abortion.\u00a0Now is the time to use every tool in our toolbox to protect women and reproductive health care.\u00a0That is why I filed a lawsuit in April\u00a0and used my executive authority to urge the Michigan Supreme Court to immediately resolve whether Michigan\u2019s state constitution protects the right to abortion. We need to clarify\u00a0that under Michigan law, access to abortion is not only legal, but constitutionally protected.\u00a0In addition, my recent executive directive\u00a0instructs all state departments and agencies not to cooperate with authorities from other states who want to prosecute women seeking\u00a0legal\u00a0abortion care\u00a0and\u00a0instructs\u00a0departments\u00a0to increase protections for reproductive healthcare.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will\u00a0fight like hell\u00a0to protect every Michiganders\u2019 right to make decisions about their own body\u00a0with the advice of a medical professional they trust.\u00a0I will not give in or give up for\u00a0my kids, your kids,\u00a0and the future of our great state.\u201d<\/p>\n
