{"id":3951,"date":"2022-08-24T01:53:54","date_gmt":"2022-08-24T01:53:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/?p=3951"},"modified":"2022-08-24T01:53:54","modified_gmt":"2022-08-24T01:53:54","slug":"first-outdoor-freedge-in-northeast-ohio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/index.php\/2022\/08\/24\/first-outdoor-freedge-in-northeast-ohio\/","title":{"rendered":"First outdoor Freedge in Northeast Ohio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3952 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/p.-10-freedge-231x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/p.-10-freedge-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/p.-10-freedge.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lorain Public Library System, El Centro de Servicios Sociales, Inc., <\/strong><strong>and Lorain County Public Health\u00a0<\/strong><strong>partner to bring the first outdoor Freedge to northeast Ohio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lorain:\u00a0 Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 16, South Lorain residents in need will have free fresh fruits, vegetables and an assortment of non-perishables accessible to them 24\/7 via a new Freedge.<\/p>\n<p>The word Freedge is an amalgamation of free and refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our Freedge is part of the global movement to place refrigerators in places in the community where anyone can access free food,\u201d says Anastasia Diamond-Ortiz, LPLS Director. \u201cFreedges are found in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America in addition to many here in the United States.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This Freedge is located in a new glass-fronted shingled structure just outside the <em>South Lorain Branch<\/em> of the <em>Lorain Public Library System<\/em> at 2121 Homewood Drive.<\/p>\n<p>The Freedge will be monitored and stocked as often as is needed by El Centro staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe need is just so great in the community,\u201d says Monica Snipes, Director of Youth Services and Project Director for 231Go Middle School Collaborative. \u201cFamilies are facing new challenges every day. Our hope is to help alleviate this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The partners agreed that access to these items 24\/7, where community members can help themselves to what they need for their family without having to speak to anyone or ask for anything, was crucial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the pandemic, inflation and other obstacles, we recognize that there are many people in our community finding themselves in an uncomfortable situation, perhaps for the first time ever in their lives, where they are not able to afford the basic necessities, and they are struggling with that realization,\u201d says Diamond-Ortiz. \u201cWe want to be sensitive to that and provide what we can while preserving the integrity, dignity and respect that is deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While there is a plan in place to stock the Freedge, community members wanting to donate can please take their food items to either the South Lorain Branch or to the El Centro offices during regular business hours.
