As a preventable cause of death, suicide is one of the biggest public health issues we face today and is the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> leading cause of death for Americans ages 10-34, and the 12<sup>th<\/sup> overall leading cause of death.<\/p>\n<p>Resilience and recovery <em>is<\/em> possible, and prevention works. There are resources available to help those in crisis find the support they need. Gryphon Place, a local nonprofit, has been helping those in conflict and crisis since 1970 and is nationally accredited and a local leader in suicide prevention services. During September, Gryphon Place is offering several opportunities to support and educate the community on suicide prevention. The events include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>all month: round-up your purchase at Harding&#8217;s Market<\/li>\n<li>Sept 4-10: book fair at This is a bookstore &amp; Bookbug<\/li>\n<li>Sept 7: safeTALK training<\/li>\n<li>Sept 12: Trivia Night at Shakespeare\u2019s Pub<\/li>\n<li>Sept 14: Adult Mental Health First Aid<\/li>\n<li>Sept 16-30: Pampered Chef Fundraiser<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sept 24: Suicide Prevention Walk<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Sept 28: Youth Mental Health First Aid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Suicide is preventable, and knowing the warning signs and resources to help someone in crisis can save a life.<\/p>\n<p>Some warning signs from the Suicide Prevention Resource Center include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Talking about death or dying<\/li>\n<li>Looking for ways to kill themselves<\/li>\n<li>Talking about feeling hopeless or having no purpose<\/li>\n<li>Talking about being a burden to others<\/li>\n<li>Increased use of drugs or alcohol<\/li>\n<li>Displaying extreme mood swings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some ways you can help someone in crisis:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Listen to what the person is saying, be sympathetic and nonjudgmental<\/li>\n<li>Ask if they have had thoughts of suicide and take the person seriously<\/li>\n<li>Do not leave the person alone<\/li>\n<li>Remove any firearms, alcohol, drugs, or sharp objects that could be used in a suicide attempt<\/li>\n<li>If a suicide attempt seems imminent, call your local crisis line (269-381-HELP)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In need of immediate help or resources?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dial 2-1-1 for access to local mental health services and resources<\/li>\n<li>Call 381-HELP (or 988, national) to talk to a crisis worker<\/li>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gryphon.org\">gryphon.org<\/a> for resources and more information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Registration and more information on all events can be found on Gryphon Place\u2019s website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gryphon.org\/event\">www.gryphon.org\/event<\/a>.
