Mike DeWine signed legislation this month aimed to stop drivers from using their phones while they are driving.<\/p>\n<p>The law establishes <em>\u201ctexting while driving\u201d<\/em> as a primary offense, allowing officers to initiate a traffic stop if they believe drivers are using their phones.<\/p>\n<p>The new law takes effect in 90 days. Violators would be charged with an unclassified misdemeanor.<\/p>\n<p><em>The new Ohio law lists about 13 instances in which this rule doesn\u2019t apply, including:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emergency calls, work calls for public safety officials<\/li>\n<li>A stopped car, whether pulled over or at a red light<\/li>\n<li>Drivers on speakerphone, so long as they\u2019re not holding the phone<\/li>\n<li>Drivers on the phone held up to their ear<\/li>\n<li>Drivers using a phone to navigate, so long as they\u2019re not holding the phone\u00b7 A person using a hands-free system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COLUMBUS, January 2023: Gov.
