Ruth E. Carter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The University of Toledo\u2019s 39th annual Conference for Aspiring Minority Youth<\/em> features Ruth E. Carter<\/em>, an Academy Award-winning costume designer for the Marvel<\/em> blockbuster Black Panther<\/em> and its sequel, and UToledo<\/em> alumna Diana Patton<\/em>, an attorney, author and motivational speaker.<\/p>\n

The event, sponsored by Toledo Excel<\/em>, a longtime scholarship incentive program at UToledo<\/em>, and Owens Corning<\/em>, is 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023 in Thompson Student Union Auditorium<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Advance registration is required for the free, public conference for seventh- and eighth-graders, high school students and parents. For more information and to register by the Friday, Jan. 27, deadline, visit the Conference for Aspiring Minority Youth webpage.<\/p>\n

Rhonda Sewell<\/em> from the Toledo Museum of Art<\/em> will moderate the conversation with Carter.<\/p>\n

In a career that spans decades, Ms.Carter<\/em> has been costume designer for most of filmmaker Spike Lee\u2019s<\/em> works, for Steven Spielberg\u2019s<\/em> historical drama Amistad<\/em> and for Eddie Murphy\u2019s<\/em> two recent comedies, Dolemite Is My Name<\/em> and Coming 2 America, among dozens of other films and TV series.<\/p>\n

Patton, who received her bachelor\u2019s degree and juris doctor from UToledo, is the author of \u201cInspiration in My Shoes,\u201d which shares her experiences as a biracial young girl who overcomes abuse, racism and heartache as a message of hope to others.<\/p>\n

Established in 1988, Toledo Excel helps underrepresented students, including African, Asian, Latino, and Native Americans, achieve success in college. Through summer institutes, academic enhancement activities and guidance through the admission process, students increase their self-esteem, cultural awareness and civic involvement.<\/p>\n
