Carter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <em>University of Toledo\u2019s 39th annual Conference for Aspiring Minority Youth<\/em> features <em>Ruth E. Carter<\/em>, an Academy Award-winning costume designer for the <em>Marvel<\/em> blockbuster <em>Black Panther<\/em> and its sequel, and <em>UToledo<\/em> alumna <em>Diana Patton<\/em>, an attorney, author and motivational speaker.<\/p>\n<p>The event, sponsored by <em>Toledo Excel<\/em>, a longtime scholarship incentive program at <em>UToledo<\/em>, and <em>Owens Corning<\/em>, is 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023 in <em>Thompson Student Union Auditorium<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Advance registration is required for the free, public conference for seventh- and eighth-graders, high school students and parents. For more information and to register by the Friday, Jan. 27, deadline, visit the Conference for Aspiring Minority Youth webpage.<\/p>\n<p><em>Rhonda Sewell<\/em> from the <em>Toledo Museum of Art<\/em> will moderate the conversation with Carter.<\/p>\n<p>In a career that spans decades, <em>Ms.Carter<\/em> has been costume designer for most of filmmaker <em>Spike Lee\u2019s<\/em> works, for <em>Steven Spielberg\u2019s<\/em> historical drama <em>Amistad<\/em> and for <em>Eddie Murphy\u2019s<\/em> two recent comedies, <em>Dolemite Is My Name<\/em> and Coming 2 America, among dozens of other films and TV series.<\/p>\n<p>Patton, who received her bachelor\u2019s degree and juris doctor from UToledo, is the author of \u201cInspiration in My Shoes,\u201d which shares her experiences as a biracial young girl who overcomes abuse, racism and heartache as a message of hope to others.<\/p>\n<p>Established in 1988, Toledo Excel helps underrepresented students, including African, Asian, Latino, and Native Americans, achieve success in college.
