Those local to Grand Rapids are also encouraged to attend at Exalta Health (2060 Division Ave. S, Grand Rapids), where the Zoom webinar will be simulcast.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alzheimer\u2019s Disease and You<\/em> provides an opportunity for attendees to learn about the impact of dementia in the Latino community. Latinos are about 1.5 times more likely than White Americans to have Alzheimer\u2019s or other dementia. In addition, 57% of Latinos believe that a significant loss of memory or cognitive abilities is a normal part of aging.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are some myths about the aging process and what normal aging is that are prevalent in the Latino community,\u201d said Alzheimer\u2019s Association Community Outreach Coordinator Mariah Cardenas. \u201cThrough this event, we hope to dispel those myths and allow people in this close-knit community to better be able to make decisions when it comes to Alzheimer&#8217;s and the best ways to support one another and their loved ones.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During the event, Dr. Daniel V\u00e9lez Ortiz and Dr. Irving Vega, from Michigan State University will discuss the impact of Alzheimer\u2019s on the Latino community. Velez Ortiz will present on his upcoming research project regarding Latino caregivers. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with Vega on Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Those participating both on Zoom or at Exalta Health will have an opportunity to ask questions. Light refreshments will be served at the in-person event.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although Latinos are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, they are underrepresented in clinical trials,\u201d said Alzheimer\u2019s Association Community Outreach Coordinator Ana Ramos. \u201cBy providing an opportunity\u00a0for the community to hear about the impact of Alzheimer&#8217;s and current research, it will give them the tools that they\u00a0need to be informed and get involved.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To register for the event in person contact Ana Ramos at 616.459.7423.
