Ms. L\u00f3pez will have to run for re-election later this year to finish the unexpired county commissioner term. also serves as the county\u2019s Democratic party chairman. If Ms. L\u00f3pez loses that election, she will be out of elected office altogether after serving the past 16 years as county auditor.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. L\u00f3pez and <em>Ms. Paula Hicks Hudson<\/em> each received a nomination to become county commissioner during a Lucas County Democratic Party central committee meeting held at the UAW Local 12 hall Saturday, January 6.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve dedicated my life to public service as an attorney and I\u2019m here to continue to fight for all citizens who are present here today, whether you vote for me or not,\u201d said Ms. L\u00f3pez. \u201cI am going to fight for labor. I\u2019m going to fight for fairness. I\u2019m going to fight for better wages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Ms. Hicks Hudson, a former Toledo mayor and state representative, mildly surprised her supporters and other party members by withdrawing her nomination in the name of party unity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8404\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8404\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8404\" src=\"http:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/anita-ursula-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/anita-ursula-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/laprensanewspaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/anita-ursula.jpg 648w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8404\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ursula Barrera-Richards and Anita L\u00f3pez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI was going to ask for your vote. I was going to ask that you consider voting for me,\u201d said Ms. Hicks Hudson. \u201cBut I listened to all of the people that I talked to, those that called me back and had honest discussions and concern for our party\u2014not concern about this position but concern that we are going to move this county forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. L\u00f3pez would face Waterville city councilman <em>John Rozic,<\/em> who is running unopposed in the Republican primary for county commissioner.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Lopez, an attorney, has subsequently resigned her county auditor position to become a commissioner. <em>Emmanuel Yakumithis<\/em> was appointed acting auditor.<\/p>\n<p>Toledo City Council member <em>Katie Moline,<\/em> who took the podium to nominate Ms. L\u00f3pez for county commissioner, is the likely Democratic party nominee to replace Ms. L\u00f3pez as county auditor. Ms. Moline, a certified public accountant, has an educational and professional background in finance and has been a constant thorn in the side of Toledo <em>Mayor Kapszukiewicz<\/em> over city spending since first being elected to city council.<\/p>\n<p>The party central committee must meet again within 45 days to consider a county auditor nominee.<\/p>\n<p>The central committee meeting had roughly 200 people in attendance.
