The\u00a0governor\u00a0made education a central focus of her 2024 State of the State Address,\u00a0calling\u00a0to expand pre-K\u00a0for all and make community college tuition-free\u00a0for all high school graduates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichigan\u2019s graduation rate increased for the second year in a row and is approaching an all-time high. These numbers reflect the work\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0been doing to make sure every child gets a quality education that sets them up for future success,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Governor Whitmer<\/strong>. \u201cLast year, we increased mental health and after-school counseling,\u00a0expanded tutoring programs to get kids back on track,\u00a0and\u00a0delivered\u00a0free breakfast and lunch to every\u00a0public school\u00a0student\u00a0in Michigan.\u00a0We are going to\u00a0build on this momentum, which is why we proposed the Michigan Guarantee in this year\u2019s budget,\u00a0so\u00a0every Michigander\u00a0is guaranteed\u00a0a tuition-free path from pre-k through community college.\u00a0Let\u2019s\u00a0get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Michigan Guarantee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In her 2024 State of the State Address, the Governor laid out her vision to improve education in Michigan. The Governor proposed the Michigan\u00a0Guarantee,\u00a0so every Michigander\u00a0can have\u00a0access to quality education from pre-k through\u00a0community college. Free pre-K saves families an average of $10,000 a year and helps students build a solid academic foundation for long-term success, improving literacy rates and closing achievement gaps. The\u00a0governor also wants to make the first\u00a0two\u00a0years of community college tuition-free for every high school graduate.\u00a0This will save students an average of $4,000 as they earn an\u00a0associate\u2019s\u00a0degree or skills certificate at a community college, helping them land a better-paying, high-skill job in a career field they\u00a0are passionate about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Governor Whitmer\u2019s Record, Bipartisan Investments in Education<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2023, Governor Whitmer signed a historic, bipartisan education budget that made the highest per-student investment in Michigan history. The budget made record investments in mental health and school safety, individualized tutoring\u00a0and\u00a0academic support through the MI Kids Back on Track Program, and\u00a0secured\u00a0funds to\u00a0retain\u00a0and develop existing teachers through mentoring programs.
