Hottest days are expected to be Monday though Sunday\u00a0with\u00a0high temperatures\u00a0in the 90s with heat index values near and above 100 degrees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Protect Yourself from Heat Injury<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it is\u00a0very hot, there is an increased risk of heat-related illness including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If not treated, heat exhaustion can worsen and cause heat stroke or death.<\/p>\n<p>Humidity can make temperatures feel even hotter.\u00a0High temperatures\u00a0plus high humidity\u00a0are\u00a0more dangerous because these conditions make it harder for the body to sweat and cool itself down. In addition to the daily temperature, residents should pay attention to the daily heat index, which gives a more\u00a0accurate\u00a0picture of how hot it feels outside.<\/p>\n<p>To stay healthy when it is hot, residents are encouraged to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drink more fluids and avoid liquids with\u00a0large amounts\u00a0of sugar or alcohol.<\/li>\n<li>Limit outdoor activities to when it is coolest in the morning and evening.<\/li>\n<li>Spend time indoors in air conditioning.<\/li>\n<li>Check to make sure your air conditioner filters are\u00a0clean\u00a0and the unit is working properly.<\/li>\n<li>Wear lightweight,\u00a0light-colored\u00a0and loose-fitting clothing.<\/li>\n<li>Wear sunscreen, as sunburn affects a body\u2019s ability to cool down.<\/li>\n<li>Check on neighbors and relatives to\u00a0determine\u00a0if they need\u00a0assistance.<\/li>\n<li>Never leave children or pets unattended in cars, even with the windows cracked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cMichigan residents can take steps to protect themselves from heat exhaustion and heat stroke,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, chief medical executive<\/strong>. \u201cYoung children, older adults and those who have\u00a0medical conditions are at increased risk for heat-related illness, so be sure to check\u00a0frequently\u00a0on them and others in your community who may need\u00a0additional\u00a0assistance. Limit time in heat, stay hydrated, avoid direct\u00a0sunlight\u00a0and find somewhere with air conditioning or take cool showers. Call 211 or contact your local health department to\u00a0locate\u00a0a cooling center in your area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heatstroke occurs when the body is unable to regulate its temperature and can result in death if not treated promptly.\u00a0\u00a0If you suspect someone has heatstroke, call 911 for immediate medical help and try to cool the person down by moving to a cooler environment and using cool cloths or a cool bath.<\/p>\n<p>Both heat exhaustion and heatstroke are forms of heat-related illness. Signs of heat-related illness vary but may include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Heavy sweating.<br \/>\n\u2022 Muscle cramps.<br \/>\n\u2022 Weakness.<br \/>\n\u2022 Confusion.<br \/>\n\u2022 Slurred speech.<br \/>\n\u2022 Dizziness.<br \/>\n\u2022 Headache.<br \/>\n\u2022 Nausea.<br \/>\n\u2022 Vomiting.<br \/>\n\u2022 Fainting.<br \/>\n\u2022 High body temperature (above 103 degrees).<br \/>\n\u2022 Tiredness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Protect Your Community<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While anyone\u2019s health can be\u00a0impacted, those most at risk includes those without access to cooling or adequate hydration.\u00a0Additional\u00a0high-risk groups\u00a0include:\u00a0pregnant people, older people, children, people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, respiratory\u00a0disease\u00a0and cardiovascular disease, those on certain medications such as certain antipsychotics, certain antidepressants and diuretics, people who live alone, and those who may be more exposed to heat\u00a0including:\u00a0outdoor workers, low-income individuals and people who exercise outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh heat and humidity can put additional stress on the body, which could potentially be life-threatening,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Col. James F. Grady II, director of the Michigan State Police<\/strong>. \u201cWe\u2019re asking people to drink plenty of water, check on neighbors and never leave anyone or an animal in an unattended vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Air Quality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>EGLE urges Michiganders to stay informed when air quality advisories or alerts are issued.\u00a0Ozone, one of the most widespread pollutants in America, is a dangerous smog caused by emissions from mobile and stationary sources.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0also most common during warmer temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh temperatures outside are sometime linked to elevated levels of pollutants like ozone. It is important for Michiganders to be aware when air quality triggers alerts,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Phil\u00a0Roos, EGLE director<\/strong>. \u201cPeople can help protect themselves and reduce pollutants by staying informed of changing air quality conditions. Some recommendations may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduce the time you are active outdoors.<\/li>\n<li>Consider less intense activities that require less physical exertion.<\/li>\n<li>If ozone levels are unhealthy, schedule outdoor activities for the morning or evening when ozone levels are usually lower.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Use Energy Wisely<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe encourage Michiganders to use energy wisely and in a way that prioritizes safety from extreme temperatures during periods of high heat which can stress the power grid,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Michigan Public Service Commissioner Alessandra Carreon<\/strong>. \u201cSimple steps \u2014 turning up the temperature on your home air conditioning a few degrees while still ensuring your\u00a0comfort, using zoned AC when possible to cool only the spaces you are occupying, making sure your windows are closed when your AC is on, doing laundry or running the dishwasher during morning or late evening hours, limiting use of the oven \u2014 can all help make sure there\u2019s enough electricity for everyone during periods of high energy demand and, very importantly, keep you safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips to beat the heat and save<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Close curtains and shades on windows during the day to keep the sun from heating the inside of your home.<\/li>\n<li>During moderate temperatures, use fans and open windows.<\/li>\n<li>Set your air conditioner to a comfortable temperature \u2013 many consider 78 a good setting \u2013 and set it higher during the hours when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0not home.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you keep your AC system free of leaves and other debris, have the system serviced regularly, replace your air filter monthly or as needed, and shut off vents to unused or unoccupied rooms to help reduce your cooling costs.<\/li>\n<li>Consider serving cool foods like sandwiches,\u00a0salads\u00a0and cold side dishes so you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have to use your oven or stove when\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0excessively hot outside or using a crock pot or outdoor grill. But if you do cook in the kitchen, use an exhaust fan to blow\u00a0hot air\u00a0out.<\/li>\n<li>Use dishwashers, ovens, washers and dryers and other energy-intensive appliances during the morning or later in the evening to help reduce stress on the electric grid during the hottest daytime hours.
