Whitmer,\u00a0MiLEAP\u00a0Encourage Families to Enroll 4-Year-Olds Now in\u00a0Pre-K\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Free High-Quality\u00a0Pre-K\u00a0Now Available for All Michigan 4-year-olds<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>LANSING, Mich., August 26, 2024:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Governor Gretchen Whitmer <\/em>and <em>Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea,<\/em> director of the <em>Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP),<\/em> reminded families that they can still enroll 4-year-olds in free, high-quality\u00a0pre-K\u00a0through their local school district.\u00a0The\u00a0recent historic investment in\u00a0Pre-K\u00a0for\u00a0All included in the state\u2019s new budget will allow\u00a0nearly 59,000\u00a0four-year-olds across the state to access free\u00a0pre-K. As of August 15, enrollment has expanded to all families regardless of income level, while continuing to prioritize families who need it most.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Free\u00a0pre-K\u00a0is here for Michigan families,\u00a0and there is still time to enroll in a program in your area. This is\u00a0a huge win\u00a0for Michigan families\u00a0that gives\u00a0kids the educational foundation they need and saves\u00a0parents thousands on\u00a0child care\u00a0costs,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Governor Whitmer<\/strong>. \u201cI am proud that we got this done in the recent balanced, bipartisan budget, and will continue to work with anyone to deliver a brighter future for our children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiLEAP\u00a0is committed to ensuring Michigan families have access to a high-quality\u00a0pre-K\u00a0education that meets their needs and helps their child thrive,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Dr. Walker-Griffea<\/strong>. \u201cThrough our efforts, we are connecting Michigan kids, families, and adults with the lifelong education opportunities they need on their path to prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Pre-K\u00a0for\u00a0All initiative ensures that every Michigan 4-year-old has access to a free, high-quality\u00a0pre-K\u00a0education, regardless of where they live. By investing in\u00a0pre-K, Michigan is supporting families by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Helping Michigan&#8217;s four-year-olds reach key developmental milestones and enter kindergarten with a strong educational foundation, setting them up for greater success in school and beyond.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Introducing children to essential skills like early math, reading, and writing from teachers who support their social and developmental needs.<\/li>\n<li>Providing families with the flexibility to work and save an estimated $10,000 per year on childcare costs, which contributes to the state&#8217;s economic growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under the FY 2025 budget, free\u00a0pre-K\u00a0enrollment was open to families up to 400% of the federal poverty limit, or about $120,000 for a family of 4. As of August 15, school districts and other\u00a0pre-K\u00a0providers may\u00a0open up\u00a0enrollment to all families, depending on availability.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s\u00a0not too late to enroll children who will be 4 years old by Dec. 1 in\u00a0pre-K\u00a0this fall! Availability varies by location, with priority given to those who need it most.
