The Annual Commemoration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Speech
Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence @ Riverside Church in NYC

New York, New York- The annual commemoration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech, Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence, was held on April 4, 2026, at 3 pm at Riverside Church in New York City. This event was filled with people from diverse peace movements, including Union Seminary staff, students, alumni, and people, such as myself, who traveled to the event from Ohio. The event started outside with a drum and song circle, as everyone sang songs, danced, and played instruments to music like “This Little Light of Mine,” which was also sung as we all walked from the song circle in the center of Union Theological Seminary, which is part of Columbia University, to Riverside Church.
Once in the church, everyone lined up for a procession and walked into the church, filling all the pews and stage with either presenters, participants, or attendees. In attendance were academics such as Cornel West, Michelle Alexander, Lucas Johnson, a long time Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR)-USA and the International Fellowship of Reconciliation (IFOR) member, and Krista Tippett of the podcast, On Being.
This event was similar to the “Breaking the Silence” event held here in Toledo, Ohio, annually, at the Monroe Street Church (3613 Monroe St., Toledo, Ohio). And I was glad that I had participated in so many of the readings in Toledo, because when I went to this event I could tell the slight differences in the presentation and learned that Rev. Dr. Vincent Harding and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote the “Beyond Vietnam” speech together, and that not one pastor was present when Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave this speech in this same Riverside Church on April 4, 1967. The speech addresses war and the opposition to it. It speaks of nonviolence, conscientious objection, and opposition to militarism. This “Holy Saturday” marked the 59th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Beyond Vietnam” speech, which was crafted by historian, activist, and beloved teacher Vincent Harding. The gathering asked the question Harding posed to this nation, and that is so pertinent to today: Is America Possible?
The 2026 Toledo MLK “Our Time to Break Silence: A Call to Action” event is scheduled for Sunday, April 19, 2026, at 3:00 PM (EDT) at the Monroe Street Church, 3613 Monroe St., Toledo, Ohio.

Nueva York, Nueva York- La conmemoración anual del discurso del reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Más allá de Vietnam: Un tiempo para romper el silencio, se celebró el 4 de abril de 2026 a las 15:00 horas en la Iglesia Riverside de la ciudad de Nueva York. Este evento estuvo lleno de personas de diversos movimientos pacifistas, incluyendo personal del Seminario Unión, estudiantes, alumnos y, como yo, que viajé desde Ohio al evento. El evento comenzó al aire libre con un círculo de tambores y canciones, mientras todos cantaban canciones, bailaban y tocaban instrumentos a música como “This Little Light of Mine,” que también se cantaba mientras todos caminábamos desde el círculo de canciones en el centro del Union Theological Seminary, que forma parte de la Universidad de Columbia, hasta la Iglesia Riverside.

Y me alegré de haber participado en tantas lecturas en Toledo, porque cuando fui a este evento pude notar las pequeñas diferencias en la presentación y no supe que el Reverendo Dr. Vincent Harding y el Reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. escribieron juntos el discurso “Más allá de Vietnam,” y que no había ni un solo pastor presente cuando el Reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. pronunció este discurso en esta misma iglesia de Riverside el 4 de abril de 1967. El discurso aborda la guerra y la oposición a ella. Habla de no violencia, objeción de conciencia y oposición al militarismo. Este “Sábado Santo” marcó el 59º aniversario del discurso “Más allá de Vietnam” del Reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., elaborado por el historiador, activista y querido profesor Vincent Harding. La reunión planteó la pregunta que Harding planteó a esta nación, y que es tan pertinente para hoy: ¿Es posible los Estados Unidos?
