TOLEDO, Ohio — Maumee Valley Country Day School music teachers Jenica Fox and Nick Fox spent their summer collaborating on a high-profile regional media project: composing and recording the original theme song for Apples to Zebras, an upcoming PBS children’s educational series designed to teach young children the alphabet through local exploration.

The interactive program connects literacy with community discovery across Lucas County. In each episode, early learners visit iconic regional landmarks—such as learning the letter “A” at MacQueen’s Apple Orchard—while collecting passport stamps in an accompanying family flip book.

“Working on a project that connects music, early childhood education, and our local Northwest Ohio community has been incredibly rewarding,” said Jenica Fox. “We wanted to create a welcoming, energetic theme song that gets kids excited to explore both the alphabet and the wonderful places right here in Lucas County.”

In addition to their work on the broadcast production, Jenica and Nick Fox will bring the project directly into the classroom this fall, performing the theme song live for Maumee Valley’s Pre-K and Kindergarten students to promote literacy and music appreciation.

Broadcast dates for full episodes will follow the September 25 public launch event.
