Lorain Public Library System has again expanded the list of nontraditional items in its Library of Things with the addition of Early Literacy Backpacks.

Each backpack includes two activities from an increasing level of Hooked on Phonics.

“The Early Literacy Backpacks are tools for caregivers and teachers to help boost children’s reading skills,” said Avon Branch Manager Donna Kelly-Sprinkle. “Based on the science of reading, LPLS children’s librarians created them for four different levels of reader which include engaging phonics, learning materials and fun and reinforcing games and activities.”

Backpack #1: Early Emergent Reader

This backpack contains Hooked on Phonics levels 1 and 2, a Trace & Write alphabet pad and a Snap & Match Beginning Sounds game.

 

Backpack #2: Emergent Reader

This backpack contains Hooked on Phonics levels 3 and 4, Fishing for Sight-Words game and Touch & Read Phonics Word match set.

 

Backpack #3: Transitional Reader

This backpack contains Hooked on Phonics levels 5 and 6, Reading Rods activity and Splat! Sight Words game.

 

Backpack #4: Early Fluent Reader

This backpack contains Hooked on Phonics levels 7 and 8, Match & Learn Long Vowels Dominoes and Decoding 2-Syllable Words Learning Center.
