The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP), located at 2308 Jefferson Ave., is a federally funded program for citizens 55 years of age and over. The FGP has a dual purpose: to engage the older citizens in volunteer service and to provide support to students. The Foster Grandparent Program is part of AmeriCorps Seniors. There are about 50 volunteers in this local program that help teachers in the classrooms and assist the most academically challenged children. Foster Grandparents are mentors, role models, and friends to those in the classroom. The cross generational bond is priceless! Because administrative, operational, and financial support is needed for the program, Senior Centers Inc. is the sponsor of the Toledo/Lucas County Foster Grandparent Program and has been the only sponsor for all 50 years of their existence in the Toledo area!
Meet Anita Hernandez, she is a Foster Grandparent who has been a part of this program for 3 years. She spends her time at the Toledo Heights Public Library at 423 Shasta Dr., in Toledo, Ohio, engaging children through games, reading, and connecting them to library staff, services, and the computers.

El Programa de Abuelas/os Adoptivos (FGP), localizado en el 2308 Jefferson Ave., es un programa financiado por el gobierno federal para personas mayores de 55 años. El FGP tiene un doble propósito: involucrar a las personas mayores en el servicio voluntario y brindar apoyo a los estudiantes. El Programa de Abuelas/os Adoptivos forma parte de AmeriCorps Seniors. Este programa local cuenta con aproximadamente 50 voluntarios que ayudan a los maestros en las aulas y a los niños con mayores dificultades académicas. Las abuelas y los abuelos adoptivos son mentores, modelos, y amigos para los alumnos. ¡El vínculo intergeneracional es invaluable! Porque el programa requiere apoyo administrativo, operativo, y financiero, Senior Centers Inc. patrocina el Programa de Abuelas/os Adoptivos del Condado de Lucas/Toledo y ha sido el único patrocinador durante sus 50 años de existencia en el área de Toledo.
