A New Era for New York City

This is a new era for New York City (NYC), New York, and La Prensa, Inc. was there to witness this historic moment. On Thursday, January 1, 2026, in front of City Hall, at 1 pm, newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) invited the public to his 2026 inauguration. The day was cold, as should be expected in NYC during the winter, yet the energy and the number of people in attendance for this historic moment was truly amazing and life-changing for so many people of historically marginalized groups. This free public inauguration had a line of people trying to enter that stretched around numerous NYC blocks, and another free and open to the public “block party” that went for blocks and looked just as long as the lines for the viewing of the New Year’s Eve ball drop, the night before. And everyone was in a celebratory mood, star gazing, and screaming “We love you Bernie” when Senator Bernie Sanders entered the highly secured and fenced-in grounds. Hundreds of people were seen walking from Brooklyn to NYC, side by side, like a wave of never-ending people, over the Brooklyn Bridge that leads directly to the NYC City Hall (see photo). Mamdani, age 34, is the first Muslim/Asian American and Democratic/Democratic Socialist of America member to ever be elected as mayor in New York City.
Una Nueva Era Para la Ciudad de Nueva York

Esta es una nueva era para la Ciudad de Nueva York (NYC), y La Prensa, Inc. estuvo allí para este momento histórico. El jueves 1 de enero de 2026, frente al City Hall, a la 1 pm, el recién elegido alcalde Zohran Mamdani (D) invitó al público a su inauguración. El día era frío, como es Nueva York durante el invierno, pero la energía y la cantidad de personas presentes en este momento histórico fueron realmente asombrosas y transformadoras para muchas personas de grupos históricamente marginados. Esta ceremonia pública y gratuita contó con una fila de personas que se extendía a lo largo de varias manzanas de Nueva York, y una fiesta callejera, también gratuita y abierta al público, que abarcaba varias manzanas y parecía tan larga como las filas para ver la caída de la bola de Nochevieja la noche anterior. Todos estaban de buen humor, admirando a las celebridades y gritando “Te queremos, Bernie” cuando el senador Bernie Sanders entró. Desde Brooklyn hasta Nueva York, cientos de personas, caminando una al lado de la otra, como una ola interminable de gente, cruzando el Puente de Brooklyn que conduce directamente al Ayuntamiento de Nueva York (ver foto). Mamdani, de 34 años, es el primer musulmán/asiático-americano y miembro del Partido Demócrata/Socialistas Democráticos de América en ser elegido alcalde de la Ciudad de Nueva York.
