Cleveland’s premiere flamenco arts & culture organization is bringing in three guest musicians from around the globe for their winter tablao at the Bop Stop this year and a family oriented version at the Knight Stage. Featuring Cuban guitarist Alex Jordan, Barcelona-born singer and percussionist Yiyi Orozco, and Akron native Marija Temo. A tablao is flamenco in its most traditional form, where improvisation and the raw passion of flamenco shine through. The Bop Stop is the perfect intimate venue for this show.
And, we’re celebrating local professional dancer La Romera’s 80th birthday for this performance. Flamenco has no boundaries when it comes to age, and Marcia “La Romera” continues to dance – with more “arte y aire” as we say in flamenco than anyone else. She embodies the spirit of flamenco. Many locally know her as the host of our monthly flamenco jams, and in this tablao, she will perform her astounding solo in the flamenco’s soleá style. As she says, “There is more dancing to do, always!” Her career began in the tablaos in Madrid in the 1970s.
Dancer Alice Lawhorn, dubbed “Cleveland’s Flamenco Queen” will also perform alongside Abrepaso’s community performers, Nicole Hunter, Tianyi Guo, Christina Patterson, and Marie Carr.
Flamenco is a music and dance form originating in Spain that features guitar, percussive dance, highly expressive singing, and exciting rhythms.
