Congratulations to Gabriela “Gaby” Rodriguez, Toledo Public Schools’ (TPS) Student Family and Community Engagement, for being honored for School Excellence by TPS. According to the Assistant Superintendent of Student, Family and Community Engagement, Linda Ruiz-Bringman, “Gaby works tirelessly, is compassionate, and advocates for our students and families.” Ruiz-Bringman says, “When there are people who look like you, have come from similar backgrounds, and have gone through the same hardships, you feel safe to let your guard down and get help.” Gaby is a gem and so needed in our Latinx community because, according to Ruiz-Bringman, “she speaks with the students about the challenges they are facing and can truly say that you can overcome the obstacles. Students are proud to be Latino because Gaby shows her pride in being Latino. “
Gaby has been with TPS for 8 years and serves as a liaison between Latino, English Language Learners (ELLs), the English as a Second Language (ESL) community, and TPS. She attends disciplinary hearings, special education meetings, and school-based meetings when requested by TPS or parents, and helps Latino and ELL students and their families by translating written documents when needed. She serves as a clearinghouse for TPS parents, while aiding in the development of the educational strategies for Latino, ELL, and ESL students district-wide.
When asked, “What she enjoys about working with students?” She says she began her career as a Spanish teacher and has always enjoyed working with students and building meaningful relationships. Many students, she says, “need someone they can talk to about their feelings, fears, and experiences. Being able to connect with them in their home language makes that connection even stronger and more impactful.” She shared that working with Latino families reminds her of my own experience- when she first came to the United States. “I did not speak English, I had my young children with me, and my husband was often traveling for work. I understand what it feels like to be in a new country for the first time—without a support system, navigating a different language and culture. Because of this, I have deep empathy for the families I serve. Whenever I am able to offer support or guidance, I do so wholeheartedly” (Rodriquez). Felicidades a Gabriela “Gaby” Rodríguez, Trabajadora de la Familia, Estudiantes, y la Comunidad para las Escuelas Públicas de Toledo (TPS), por ser reconocida por la Excelencia Escolar por parte de TPS. Según la Subdirectora de Participación Estudiantil, Familiar y Comunitaria, Linda Ruiz-Bringman, “Gaby trabaja incansablemente, es compasiva y defiende a nuestros estudiantes y familias.” Ruiz-Bringman dice: “Cuando hay personas que se parecen a ti, que vienen de orígenes similares y que han pasado por las mismas dificultades, te sientes seguro para bajar la guardia y pedir ayuda.” Gaby es una joya y muy necesaria en nuestra comunidad latina porque, según Ruiz-Bringman, “habla con los estudiantes sobre los retos que enfrentan y puede decir sinceramente que se pueden superar los obstáculos.” Los estudiantes están orgullosos de ser latinos porque Gaby muestra su orgullo por ser latina.”
Gaby lleva 8 años en TPS y actúa como enlace entre latinos, estudiantes de inglés (ELLs), la comunidad de inglés como segunda lengua (ESL) y TPS. Asiste a audiencias disciplinarias, reuniones de educación especial y reuniones escolares cuando TPS o los padres lo solicitan, y ayuda a estudiantes latinos y ELL y a sus familias traduciendo documentos escritos cuando es necesario. Actúa como centro de apoyo para padres de TPS, mientras colabora en el desarrollo de estrategias educativas para estudiantes latinos, ELL y ESL en todo el distrito.
Cuando le preguntan: “¿Qué le gusta cuando trabaja con estudiantes?” Dice que comenzó su carrera como profesora de español y siempre ha disfrutado trabajando con los alumnos y construyendo relaciones significativas. Muchos estudiantes, dice, “necesitan a alguien con quien puedan hablar sobre sus sentimientos, miedos y experiencias. Poder conectar con ellos en su idioma materno hace que esa conexión sea aún más fuerte e impactante.” Compartió que trabajar con familias latinas le recuerda su propia experiencia, cuando llegó por primera vez a Estados Unidos. “No hablaba inglés, llevaba a mis hijos pequeños conmigo y mi marido viajaba a menudo por trabajo. Entiendo lo que se siente al estar en un país nuevo por primera vez, sin un sistema de apoyo, navegando por un idioma y una cultura diferentes. Por eso, siento una profunda empatía por las familias a las que sirvo. Siempre que puedo ofrecer apoyo o orientación, lo hago de todo corazón” (Rodríguez).
