Lorain County Community College will hold the 44th Santarelli Memorial 5K at 9:15 a.m. on July 23.  The race is open to the public.

The entry fee for the race is $25, which includes a T-shirt (while supplies last).  Awards will be given to the top 5K finishes in the female, male, and age group categories. A free 1-mile fun run will be held at 9 a.m., prior to the main event.

Named after the late David Santarelli, a former cross country runner at LCCC, the event is held on the college’s historic cross country course which has been the host of OHSAA cross country district championships in the past.

“David continued to help out the team after contracting cancer and, after his death, Jack Wilhelm started the race in his honor,” LCCC Cross Country Head Coach and Santarelli Memorial Race Director Jim Powers said.

Students that participated in LCCC’s running camp have free entry to the race.

“In addition to the general public, we strongly encourage high school runners in the surrounding areas to come out and experience the challenge and fun of cross country running,” said Powers, who will enter his 15th year this fall.

Runners can register prior to the event at https://www.peaceracing.com/ or on the LCCC website.

Proceeds benefit the LCCC Cross Country team and the LCCC Washka Scholarship.

Race day registration will be available.

LCCC Named 2022 Organization of the Year by the United States Tennis Association Midwest Section

Lorain County Community College was named the 2022 Organization of the Year by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Midwest Section.

LCCC has partnered with USTA Midwest since 2008, when the college formed its first tennis club team for students. Since then, LCCC and USTA Midwest partnered on several initiatives including free tennis play days and equipment distribution at LCCC learning centers, as well as summer tennis camps and tennis instruction for children in evening care programs. Most recently, LCCC hosted the LCCC/USTA Summer Smash Youth Tennis Camp. Annually, more than 500 students and community members interact with tennis through LCCC’s on campus and community programming.

Additionally, the college hosts local high school tennis teams for practices on campus and maintains indoor and outdoor tennis facilities that are open to the community and students.

Jim Powers, associate professor in the health and wellness division at LCCC, leads the college’s tennis efforts. Powers serves on the adult social committee of USTA Midwest, and is the vice president of the board of directors of the USTA Northeast Ohio district.

“Receiving this recognition was a great surprise and very much appreciated,” Powers said. “LCCC has been a recipient of several USTA grants, and our continued relationship with the USTA Midwest section will help us tremendously as we offer sport, fitness and recreational opportunities to our students and the community.”

The USTA Midwest Section is comprised of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and parts of Wisconsin and West Virginia.

LCCC will host the 38th annual LCCC Tennis Classic on July 23-24. For more information, visit www.lorainccc.edu/tennis or contact jpowers@lorainccc.edu.
