Since 1929, the Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association has been assisting the families of the greater Toledo area who are in need of coats, shoes, food and emergency clothing. On Friday December 2, 2022, the Toledo Newsboys will be participating in the 93rd Annual Charity Paper Sale.

The Toledo Newsboys has never failed to answer a call for assistance from a school administrator, police officer, firefighter, or neighbor. Our economic times cause so many in our community to battle to meet daily demands and the cold weather, holiday season can compound this already difficult situation. Because of these difficult times, the needs of so many of our children are greater than ever.

In the past year, the Toledo Newsboys has been able to provide over 2,300 coats and over 2,100 shoes. We spent approximately $110,000 on shoes and coats for the 2021-2022 school year.

Along with this aid we awarded $65,000 in College Scholarships. We spent over $6,000 on one-time emergency relief for 15 families and just under $600 for emergency food requests. Last year the Toledo Newsboys provided services to 170 schools in the area.

The collections from our annual Paper Sale continue to provide the funding for the assistance for which the Toledo Newsboys has become synonymous. Unfortunately, the single-day collections at street corners, malls, stores, and factories are simply not enough. It is with this in mind that I am asking your help to aid the organization in increasing our collections so that the goals of the Toledo Newsboys are met. Please help in supporting the Toledo Newsboys today!

The Toledo Old Newsboys Goodfellows Association was very sorry to hear of the passing of longtime newspaper sales man Steven D. Segura last week. Steven died unexpectedly on November 19th, just two weeks prior to this year’s sale. He was a proud participant of the Old Newsboys, being named an honorary chairperson in 2016 for his dedication to the organization.

He began selling papers in the early 1970s as part of a community involvement activity at Waite High School and continued volunteering for the organization ever since, recruiting several members of his family and from his friendship circle during that time to sell papers on the first Friday in December each year.

The Old Newsboys motto that “no child shall miss school for lack of coat or shoes” fit perfectly with the values instilled in him by his parents. He could be found selling the paper for decades on the corner of Miami Street and Oregon Road. This year his presence will be sorely missed although members of his family will be taking his place at this corner this year.

The Toledo Old Newsboys ask you to please consider making a donation in his memory for this ninety-third paper sale on Friday December 2, 2022 to help them to continue their mission.
