Soft, warm, and perfect for any meal, these homemade flour tortillas are simple to make and full of flavor. With just a few pantry staples, you can create tender, flexible tortillas that are far better than store-bought!

Ingredients:

– 3 cups all-purpose flour

– ½ cup Crisco or lard

– ½ tablespoon salt

– 1 teaspoon baking powder

– 1 cup hot water

– Extra flour for dusting

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Add the Crisco (or lard) and mix it into the dry ingredients until the texture is crumbly, with no large clumps.
  3. Make a well in the center and pour in the hot water. Stir to combine until a dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and no longer sticky.
  5. Divide the dough into small portions, shaping them into balls or discs. Let them rest for 10 minutes.
  6. Lightly dust your work surface with flour and roll out each piece into a thin tortilla.
  7. Heat a comal or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for about 30-40 seconds per side or until lightly browned and puffed in spots.
  8. Wrap cooked tortillas in a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and soft. Enjoy your fresh, homemade tortillas!
