(Madison, WI)- On April 23, 2026, the Interfaith Peace Working Group of Madison, Wisconsin, held a conference on Nonviolence in Action: An Interfaith Conversation on Building the Beloved Community at Bethel Lutheran Church. The conference started with a breakfast, singing, and an opening meditation by the Pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church.
A presentation of the “Beloved Community Solidarity Award” was given to Salah Sarsour of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee. It was received by his son, since Salah Sarsour is currently being held in an immigration detention center. The group is demanding his release.
Keynote speakers were Shane Claiborne of Red Letter Christians and author of numerous books, and Kathy Kelly, an American peace activist, pacifist, author, and founding member of Voices in the Wilderness. Also during this conference were sessions that focused on Immigrant Rights, facilitated by La Prensa Editor Dr. Linda Alvarado-Arce; Visions of a Just Peace between Buddhists & Israelis; Criminal Justice Reform; Gun Violence Prevention & The Peace of God; Alternatives to Militarism; Nonviolent Action for Our Climate; Protecting our Democracy; and the Poor Peoples Campaign for Economic Justice.
The day ended with a “Beating Guns into Garden Tools” demonstration by Jeff Wild, and a walk to the State Capitol with banners, signs, and music that focused on the release of Salah Sarsour, immigrant deaths in the detention centers, and in building our beloved community.
IPWG Mission
The Interfaith Peace Working Group (IPWG) is made up of advocates from communities of faith and conscience committed to the struggle for justice, peace and the care of creation.
The specific purposes of the IPWG are to:
- Educate the public about the theory and practice of nonviolence and advocate for its use in the struggle for peace, justice and the care of creation.
- Work for the demilitarization of our society by educating people about the negative effects of spending more than half of the nation’s discretionary funds on the military and advocating that a significant percentage of these military expenditures be used instead to fund projects addressing urgent human and environmental needs.
IPWG works in coalition with other groups on peace, justice, and environmental issues, all of which we understand to be interrelated.

Conferencia del Grupo de Trabajo Interreligioso por la Paz en Madison, WI

(Madison, WI) – El 23 de abril de 2026, el Grupo de Trabajo Interreligioso por la Paz de Madison, Wisconsin, celebró una conferencia sobre la No Violencia en Acción: Una Conversación Interreligiosa sobre la Construcción de la Comunidad Querida en la Iglesia Luterana Bethel. La conferencia comenzó con un desayuno, canto y una meditación inicial a cargo del pastor de la Iglesia Luterana Bethel.
Se entregó la entrega del “Premio a la Solidaridad Comunitaria Amada” a Salah Sarsour de la Sociedad Islámica de Milwaukee. Fue recibido por su hijo, ya que Salah Sarsour está en un centro de detención de inmigrantes. El grupo exige su liberación.
Los ponentes principales fueron Shane Claiborne, de Red Letter Christians y autor de numerosos libros, y Kathy Kelly, activista por la paz, pacifista, autora y miembro fundadora de Voces en el Deserto. El día terminó con una demostración “Golpeando armas contra herramientas de jardín” de Jeff Wild y caminamos hasta el Capitolio Estatal con pancartas, carteles y música centrada en la liberación de Salah Sarsour, las muertes de inmigrantes en los centros de detención y en la construcción de nuestra querida comunidad.
Misión del IPWG
El Grupo de Trabajo Interreligioso por la Paz (IPWG) está formado por defensores de comunidades de fe y conciencia comprometidos con la lucha por la justicia, la paz y el cuidado de la creación.
Los propósitos específicos del IPWG son:
- Educar al público sobre la teoría y la práctica de la no violencia y abogar por su uso en la lucha por la paz, la justicia y el cuidado de la creación.
- Trabajar por la desmilitarización de nuestra sociedad educando a la población sobre los efectos negativos de gastar más de la mitad de los fondos discrecionales del país en el ejército y defendiendo que un porcentaje significativo de estos gastos militares se utilice en su lugar para financiar proyectos que aborden necesidades humanas y medioambientales urgentes.
El IPWG trabaja en coalición con otros grupos en temas de paz, justicia y medio ambiente, todos los cuales entendemos que están interrelacionados.
